An ASEAN Interim Observer Team (IOT) has commenced its mission in the border provinces of Preah Vihear and Banteay Meanchey to monitor the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.

Led by Brigadier General Dato’ Pahlawan Asri bin Shukor, who is Director of Training at the Malaysian Army HQ, the team includes members from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam.

The deployment follows the agreements made during recent diplomatic sessions — notably the July 28 Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Special Meeting in Malaysia, and an Extraordinary Meeting on August 7 — aimed at ensuring compliance with the ceasefire and fostering regional cooperation.

Thailand’s Ministry of National Defence has given formal support for the mission, which began with the arrival of the IOT in Phnom Penh on September 10. Official statements emphasise the commitment of ASEAN member states — especially Malaysia as the current chair — to peace, stability, and collaborative solutions in resolving the border tension.

The team’s remit is to observe, verify, and report on the situation in the contested border areas, ensuring that both parties adhere to the ceasefire terms. The observer presence is seen as a concrete step toward de-escalation and improved transparency, reinforcing ASEAN’s role in mediating regional security issues.
