The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has declared a red alert across its units as protests against corruption in flood control projects intensify. The move, effective since September 12, aims to support the Philippine National Police (PNP) in maintaining peace. AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla assured the public there is no cause for alarm, noting that increased personnel are on standby and leave privileges are suspended.

The alert comes amid growing dissatisfaction over alleged corruption, with protests gaining attention. The AFP respects peaceful assemblies but warns against exploiting protests to incite violence or instability. It also rejected calls for the military to withdraw support from the government, emphasizing solutions through democratic means rather than extra-constitutional actions.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is considering raising its alert status for protests expected on September 21, marking the anniversary of martial law. Although recent demonstrations have seen low turnout, NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin maintains readiness with a security template in place. Routine border measures remain, and recent reports of increased checks in northern Caloocan were dismissed as miscommunication.

In Cagayan de Oro City, Xavier University students protested against systemic corruption, demanding accountability. Parallelly, San Carlos City’s San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral Parish announced a "Walk Against Corruption" for September 20, urging participants to wear white and carry placards. Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos also called for accountability, stressing the moral imperative against theft.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that the PNP is prepared to assist in securing ongoing DPWH inspections of flood control projects. The PNP’s role, although not technical, is critical due to security threats during these inspections.

Key Takeaways

  • AFP is on red alert as a precaution amid corruption protests.
  • Future police alert status adjustments are being evaluated for upcoming rallies.
  • Protests highlight demands for accountability and integrity in governance.
