Trump Pushes to Designate Antifa as 'Terrorist Organization'

US President Donald Trump announced plans to designate the anti-fascist movement, Antifa, as a "major terrorist organization." Made via social media during his UK visit, this move follows past threats and labels the movement, known for opposing fascists and neo-Nazis, as a significant threat. Trump declared Antifa a "SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER" and called for an investigation into its funding sources.

Trump’s push for this designation comes amid ongoing claims by his administration that Antifa is behind various violent acts. His threat was reinforced by senior White House official Stephen Miller, who linked the movement to a supposed "vast domestic terror movement" and the recent killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Despite these claims, the movement lacks the hierarchical structure typical of designated terror groups.

Federal law enforcement's role includes addressing domestic terrorism; however, the US lacks a formal list of domestic terror organizations. Trump’s former FBI director, Christopher Wray, testified that Antifa is an ideology rather than an organization, complicating any attempts to label it as a terrorist group officially. The White House has yet to provide further details on this proposed designation process.

Reactions to the announcement were swift, with Sen. Bill Cassidy supporting Trump’s move. Cassidy claimed Antifa uses legitimate grievances to incite violence and praised the designation as necessary to address their destructive role. This follows a 2019 Senate resolution by Cassidy and Sen. Ted Cruz condemning Antifa's violence and seeking to classify it as a domestic terror group.

The legal and practical implications of this designation remain uncertain. Antifa operates as a diffuse movement without centralised leadership; classification and enforcement pose challenges. We still don't know how Trump's administration intends to implement this initiative or how it might affect domestic policy and civil liberties.

Key Takeaways

  • President Trump plans to label Antifa a "terrorist organization."
  • The move is complicated by Antifa's decentralized nature and lack of hierarchy.
  • Supporting voices include Sen. Bill Cassidy, who backs the designation.

And the citizens of the USA voted this village idiot into power.

What a pity that they can; vote him out again, quite as easily.

Literally no member of Antifa is married with children.  I miss their mostly peaceful, but fiery protests riots. :coffee1:

We can criticize D. Trump for his brutality, as is the norm in Europe, but we must also recognize his merits.
He's moving, he's trying, he's acting.
While others exchange endless palaver.
I fully support him on this.

Calling members of the armed forces ANTIFA is an insult to the military.

The fact is he’s acting outside of the laws and constitution.

The fact is he’s acting, he considers what he does television entertainment.

Like he said when him and his goons beat up on Zelensky "it's good television."

The fool doesn't realize his teevee stunts clash with his fascist initiative.

I'm sure your experience with the Southern border makes people who are here illegally somehow legal.

That's ironic.

This is a statue of Marines during the battle of Iwo Jima which 6,821 died, and 19,217 were wounded.

This how ANTIFA paid their respect the Marines.

Yes, it's sad.  Now it seems it's wrong to be anti-fascist.

It will be seen that, as used, the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley's broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else.

No domestic framework exists - The US only has mechanisms to designate foreign terrorist organizations, not domestic ones

Antifa isn't even an organization - It's a decentralized movement with no leadership, membership lists, or central structure

First Amendment issues - Legal experts say this would face massive constitutional challenges

Reality check: Even Trump's own former FBI director Christopher Wray testified that antifa is "not a group or organization" but rather "a movement or an ideology"
