Russia’s New Jet-Powered Shahed Revealed: What It Means for Ukraine

Ukraine’s military intelligence service (GUR) has unveiled detailed information on Russia’s new jet-powered Shahed drone, following the recovery of an intact unit. The discovery confirms Moscow has been using this faster and more dangerous variant since June, marking a significant escalation in its drone warfare.

The new Geran-2 variant is a Russian-built copy of Iran’s Shahed-136, upgraded with a Chinese-made jet engine. Unlike the original propeller-driven version — dubbed the “moped” for its distinctive buzzing sound — the jet-powered drone offers higher speeds, reducing reaction time for air defenses and complicating Ukraine’s already strained air defense network.

While the jet Shahed does not feature groundbreaking technology, it represents a costly but impactful evolution in Russia’s drone arsenal. Analysts note that speed is a crucial advantage: where propeller-driven Shaheds cruise at around 120 mph and are relatively easy targets for systems like Germany’s Gepard anti-aircraft guns, the jet variant forces Ukraine to adapt quickly.

Russia has repeatedly experimented with Shahed tactics to improve effectiveness, from wave attacks to rerouted flight paths, stealth black paint, jam-resistant navigation, and real-time reprogramming of drones mid-flight. The addition of a jet engine builds on this trend, mirroring Iranian developments such as the Shahed-238 unveiled in 2023.

According to analyst Shahryar Pasandideh, Iran now fields at least three jet-powered Shahed models, with Russia’s version appearing to be distinct. For Ukraine, the threat lies less in individual drones and more in mass launches. Even with an 83% interception rate in August, the sheer volume means some always slip through. Faster drones will only increase the strain.

Key Takeaways:

  • Russia’s jet-powered Shahed is a faster, harder-to-stop evolution of the Geran-2.

  • Ukraine intercepted 83% of Shaheds in August, but mass swarm attacks remain effective.

  • The Chinese-supplied jet engine highlights international links in drone development.
