Starting with the 2025–2026 academic year, Ho Chi Minh City plans to restrict mobile phone and electronic device usage during school break times. This initiative will begin at 16 pilot schools and extend across the city by January 2026. The goal is to curb potential negative impacts of technology use on students.

The decision follows a conference by the municipal Department of Education and Training on September 18. Currently, students can use devices during recess, and in class with teachers' permission for educational purposes. With over 3,500 schools and 2.5 million students, the new policy aims to enhance student engagement through alternative activities.

Measures include awareness campaigns about the risks of excessive device usage, such as data leaks and cyberbullying. Schools will promote sports events, cultural performances, reading sessions, and life skill clubs to create a more engaging environment for students. Director Nguyen Van Hieu emphasized the importance of balancing technology use with personal interaction and communication.

Experts believe that fostering a friendly and safe school environment is crucial, as uncontrolled device use can lead to serious issues. The policy aims to guide students toward a balanced use of technology that does not disrupt education or essential social interactions.

Going forward, the city will assess the pilot program's effectiveness and gather feedback to refine implementations. The education sector will focus on aligning technology use with educational goals while ensuring student safety and social development.

Key Takeaways

  • Device restrictions aim to reduce technology's negative impacts.
  • Schools will offer activities to replace device use during breaks.
  • The policy seeks a balanced approach to technology and interaction.
