Pham Thai Ha, former Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Office, has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison. The sentence results from a significant corruption case involving property and construction giant Thuan An. Nguyen Duy Hung, former Chairman of Thuan An, received a ten-year and six-month sentence for violating bidding regulations, causing state losses exceeding VND120 billion (US$4.59 million).

The Hanoi People's Court found Hung primarily responsible for manipulating bidding processes by leveraging connections with central and local leaders. Hung's efforts included offering bribes to officials and directing Thuan An staff to breach bidding protocols. Pham Thai Ha was charged under the Penal Code for abusing his power to influence others for personal gain.

The court proceedings, lasting over 10 days, convicted 28 additional defendants on charges ranging from violating bidding laws to abusing power. Among them, Le O Pich, former Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, received a three-year sentence for abusing power in his duty. Other accused individuals faced sentences varying from suspended terms to seven years in prison.

Projects across former Bac Giang, Tuyen Quang, Quang Ninh, and Hanoi were implicated in the illicit activities. These included infrastructure projects such as Dong Viet Bridge and segments of National Highway 14E. Hung's network, including Pham Thai Ha, reportedly secured bidding advantages for Thuan An Group through orchestrated consortiums and illicit payments.

The court's decision is a stern reminder of the legal consequences of compromising public resources and trust. As the sentences are implemented, there may be further scrutiny of business and political practices, aiming to foster greater transparency and integrity. Authorities might also increase regulatory oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Key Takeaways

  • Pham Thai Ha and Nguyen Duy Hung received five and ten-year sentences, respectively, for corruption.
  • The court implicated several high-profile projects across multiple provinces in Vietnam.
  • The case emphasizes the importance of transparency and the rule of law in government processes.
