The Traffic Police Department has announced plans to collaborate with national authorities to assess the potential impact of narrowing current 3.5-meter car lanes. This initiative aims to decrease traffic accidents and congestion caused by vehicles straddling wide lanes. The department believes that narrower lanes will prevent the unsafe practice of three cars occupying two lanes simultaneously.

At a meeting held on Wednesday with administrators of traffic-related online forums and social media platforms, Major General Do Thanh Binh, director of the Traffic Police Department, discussed plans for lane width reductions. Lane widths for motorized vehicles are currently defined by road classes under national technical standards. Arterial roads in large urban areas have lanes between 3.5 and 3.75 meters wide, whereas smaller streets have lanes measuring 2.75 to 3 meters wide.

Major General Binh also stated the department's intent to shorten the duration vehicles are held by police following accidents, aiming to enhance transparency in managing speed violations. He emphasized that there should be clear signage where traffic officers are present, and there will be no instances of officers hiding to catch unwary drivers.

Key Takeaways

  • Authorities plan to narrow lanes to reduce accidents and congestion.
