In West Bank, Palestinian Recognition Welcomed Despite Fears of Israeli Annexation

The killing of 13-year-old Islam Majarmeh in Jenin underscores the rising human toll of Israel’s expanded military operations in the occupied West Bank, even as international recognition of Palestinian statehood gains momentum.

Islam’s father, Abdel Aziz Majarmeh, was standing beside his son when Israeli forces opened fire earlier this month near the entrance to Jenin refugee camp. “My son fell to the ground, and then I heard the sound of a shot,” he said. Soldiers then ordered him to leave at gunpoint. “I didn’t even know my son was martyred. I started dragging him away.”

The Israeli army stated it had fired to neutralize a threat posed by individuals entering a closed military zone but declined to clarify what threat the teenager posed.

Jenin and Tulkarem, once under full Palestinian Authority control under the Oslo Accords, have been reoccupied since January. Israel says the incursions are aimed at crushing armed groups and preventing attacks, applying tactics it has used in Gaza. Entire neighborhoods of the camps have since been demolished.

Abdel Aziz said he returned to retrieve family documents from his home when the shooting occurred. For him, the conflict is not abstract geopolitics but the loss of his child. “Why pick on a 13-year-old boy? I’m standing right next to him. Shoot me. Why are you shooting children?”

Key Takeaways

  • A 13-year-old Palestinian boy was killed by Israeli forces in Jenin, reigniting anger over the human impact of ongoing military operations.

  • Israel has reoccupied Jenin and Tulkarem camps, citing counterterrorism, while Palestinians see deepening annexation.

  • Families like Abdel Aziz Majarmeh’s highlight the powerlessness of Palestinians under occupation, where even the Palestinian Authority offers no protection.
