Import Tax - 100% on personal clothes

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Just imported 5 t-shirts from the U.K.  Value ฿2,640. Just received a card to pick up the package and pay ฿2,640 in tax!!

My previous shipment of a similar value last year had 40% tax but only on the value above ฿1,200.

There are no shipment details for us to contact Customs and the Post Office won’t release the shipment until we pay ฿2,640.

Completely bonkers!

Anyone know how to sort this import tax out as it cannot be right.

I have been here over 25 years, the first 20 working for a manufacturing concern that imported and exported. Opening up a dialog with customs is really not a rabbit hole you want to go down, unless you speak fluent Thai, you have a lot of spare time on your hands that you really enjoy wasting. Give it a try, and I honestly hope it works out for you.

Keep in mind, that the duty is applies to cost + freight, and the VAT applies to cost + freight + duty. If the duty is 40%, then:  1.07 X ((cost + freight) X 40%)

Plus, any clearing fees

Keep in mind, people (not you) are constantly trying to cheat them, so the burden of proof is on you.

I suggest Amazon, because they handle everything, you know up front what everything is going to cost, and it shows up at your door. The tax/duty Amazon charges with the order is an estimate of the maximum it will cost, and when it comes out less than expected, they refund the difference.

I would just pay the post office and move on.

Also makes it hard to understand why Thai government expressed concern at the US removing the 'de minimis' allowance of $800 per package - tax free into the US when they rip everyone off as much as they can if someone orders from abroad regardless of where it comes from.

You mean Amazon the US company? since when is that available in Thailand?

I don't agree with tariffs as being a good policy but it was nice to see Thailand finally get hurt for once on taxes.

Not sure, but I've been using them for years.

I have also used Amazon in the U.K. to send things to Thailand.

As you say it is all handled for you, you know what you pay and it turns up at your door.

This time I was buying direct from a large U.K. retailer who doesn’t use Amazon and won’t ship internationally. I used my Mail handling company in the U.K. to receive and forward the items.  Involves a trip to the local post office to release the item and paying import tax. Sadly, I didn’t know the level of import tax before it arrived. I think somewhere along the line the value of the imported items has been inflated.

I normally buy things locally and going forward on the occasions I want to buy something from the U.K. I will definitely only use Amazon.

Time to pay up the import tax for this latest delivery and move on.

That's good to know but you're still gonna get hit with the 40%+ tax I'm sure.

Just opened Amazon and it does appear to show the tax there. Is it reliable though? That's only 17% tax. I was just in the US over the summer and bought hundreds of dollars of stuff on Amazon and get hit with sales tax at 8% anyways.

It is reliable. As I said in a previous post: "The tax/duty Amazon charges with the order is an estimate of the maximum it will cost, and when it comes out less than expected, they refund the difference." The $15.40 includes the 7% VAT as well, so the duty is only 10%.

Duty depends on the item. For tools, it is low, for clothes it is high. If it is a product category that is produced in Thailand, the duty will typically be high.

Also, manufacturers with official representatives in other countries, often do not allow exports to those countries, and Amazon will not ship there.

Anything that requires an import license, like food products, Amazon will not ship.

And the orders usually come much sooner than the estimated delivery date.

most of this stuff is made in China, shipped to the US and now shipped back to Asia but not after the Thai government can get their cut. Oh my what a mess...

anyways, thanks for the info I appreciate it. I'll try to buy something and see how it works out. It looks like just a subset of what's available in the US though sadly.

The Chinese products are cheaper here.

I buy specialty/quality tools and whatnot, better selection and most always cheaper in the US.

Incidentally, in 2001 I bought a Nikon cameral body in the US, it was significantly cheaper than it was in Thailand. It was made in Thailand.

The problem is that the higher quality stuff is made for the US market via US companies so it gets priced accordingly. Presumably if there were some Thai companies with a supply chain setup they could make high quality stuff too at a lower price point.

For those who use Amazon:
Do you use the Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com (or another country's version)?

Reason I ask is wondering if shipping charges (if any) are lower if the country is closer to Thailand?

I use Amazon in the US, but you can check the rates on both.

We have Amazon in OZ

I'm see zero shipping cost on Amazon US (with a minimum purchase amount). Not sure why they do this since even in the US there is a shipping fee. I canceled my Amazon Prime since I left the US but maybe it's still active though.

The free shipping is for select products.

Yeah, sorry. May have been a bit too vague.

Meant to ask: For those who use Amazon in Thailand (US, UK, OZ or other version) are there any issues with import taxes or shipping fees?

When I lived in Taiwan I used Amazon all the time (USA version) and never got charged extra shipping but sometimes I got request for import duty from the government. Also, the shipping was slow.

Beware of anything else except Amazon US. Amazon US is the only one that offers prepaid return labels through DHL. The others like UK are scumbags and ship their products in cheapest possible packaging that arrives damaged. If you want to return it you are required to pay return shipping, but the kicker is they have a maximum refundable shipping amount and if there is only 1 word that's not in English on she shipping receipt they will disallow it.

I occasionally ship from Amazon U.K. Don’t do often but when I have it has worked well and I have never had any issues with import taxes or shipping fees as everything is clearly laid out before I complete the purchase so I know the overall cost.

The only downside is there are a limited number of items that can be shipped to Thailand as a lot of sellers won’t ship to Thailand.

There are plenty of t-shirts to buy in Bangkok.

The import taxes vary by products. For example look at this one (electric toothbrush) has a 60% import tax on it.

some companies may have been able to lobby the government for higher taxes on their competition.  bastards.

They will not pay the return shipment. It will sit for 60 or 90 days, and then it will be auctioned off.

Amazon will ship to Thailand but you STILL pay exorbitant import tax. I wanted to buy a package of 5 men's white T-shirts, cost tag ~$20 USD. It was going to wind up costing me nearly $100 USD because of shipping/tax.

With Amazon US, I have never had an issue such that I had to pay any additional fees. Cost of shipping and taxes are clear before you place the order.

I have gotten partial refunds a few times when the taxes were less than the original quote.

As far as I remember, I have always received my orders before the stated delivery date, but I am in Bangkok, up or down country may be slower.

I have to say, one big benefit of covid was the improvement of ground delivery services.
