Bill Maher Predicts Rise of Autocracy Under Trump

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher made a sharp prediction about the future of U.S. democracy during his September 26 episode of Real Time With Bill Maher. His remarks came after former FBI Director James Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia.

Maher, 69, mocked the handling of the case by pointing out that Trump’s attorney, Lindsey Halligan, has no prosecutorial experience and previously worked in insurance law. “If this was an episode of Boston Legal, you’d say this show had jumped the shark,” Maher quipped, also joking about her past as a beauty pageant contestant.

He then turned serious, suggesting the U.S. has entered a dangerous phase: “If you are tracking the rise of autocracy, we’re past the muzzling dissident phase, and we’re into the prosecuting political enemy space. I think Trump could be in the general’s uniform by Christmas.”

The comments followed Comey’s indictment on charges of obstruction of justice and making false statements tied to his 2020 Senate testimony. Comey is the first senior official charged in connection with the investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign and alleged Russian ties.

Maher also tied the moment to broader concerns about freedom of speech and political retribution. He highlighted the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Kimmel’s controversial remarks about Charlie Kirk’s death. The show returned on September 23 with strong ratings, underscoring public interest in political satire during turbulent times.

Maher concluded that Trump’s administration has shifted into a stage where opponents are targeted under the guise of legal proceedings. “They will find something to pull you over for,” he warned.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bill Maher warned the U.S. is moving toward “autocracy” under Trump.
  • His remarks followed James Comey’s federal indictment on two charges.
  • Maher criticized Trump’s legal team and linked events to political retribution.

Bill has been right on Trump of course and said that he'd never accept defeat in 2020.  He has in my opinion become a tad - I told you so  - in recent times. Like if you sat on a park bench and someone sat with you and was quite funny at first but then tells you how the world is and should be and gets a bit boring.  But still pretty good.  Could have  watched too many episodes.

I don't trust the guy. Never married. Never seen with women.

Very strange.

Very strange.

When in doubt, queer bait.

Absolutely. It is already happening. Trump wants to be a dictator and despises democratic institutions and the rule of law.

He's not gay, nor queer. Aapparently.

So he says.

So why is he never seen with a woman? Never married.

Very, very odd person.

Supposedly addicted to Marijuana.

Maher was prescient in predicting Trump's atrocious anti-American behavior after losing the election in 2020.

This time however, it's a matter of joining a very large crowd.

Anyone who has been paying any attention knows full well that the Trump2.0 is deeply, dangerously authoritarian.

It's not a matter of will be.

It already happened and it happened very quickly.

People denying this are mostly in the  maga cult, though of course many in the maga cut are very much in favor of a Trump dictatorship.

Without knowing you personally I feel confident in saying -- pot kettle black.

A Trump dictatorship would be very benevolent. I don't know why you're not in favour.

The levels of delusionality in your post are awesome to behold.

Strange how you project your inner failures on a forum.

Maher is not wrong - project should be nearly complete by early next year.

Maher has famously been both anti-marriage and anti-children in his act and has never had any long-term relationships. He has no family I know of and I don’t know of any friends. He has always been vituperative to the industry that has been so good to him and he’s even held his fellow late night colleagues with scorn. He famously excoriated Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart for their march involving unity in 2010 and his attack on the overweight so outraged James Corden that Corden called him out in the media. Even the people he invites on his show he barely seems to tolerate. He only treats his studio audience with something resembling respect and maybe its only because he doesn’t think he can afford to isolate them.
