A South Korean man, his Thai wife, and their 10-year-old son were rescued on Saturday, September 27, after being lost for over five hours in Doi Khun Tan National Park, Lampang, Thailand. Officials from Hang Chat District, along with national park rangers and volunteers, initiated the search, locating the family around 10 p.m. The family had been separated from a group of nearly 30 hikers and were found 5 to 7 kilometers from the Mae Tan Noi Reservoir, appearing exhausted but safe.

The group began their trek from Mae Tan Noi Station after traveling by train from Chiang Mai. The South Korean man, aged 68, his 54-year-old Thai wife, and their son lagged behind the group and attempted to return, becoming lost in the process. They called for help, prompting a coordinated search by officials who used both foot patrols and motorcycles to locate them.

Following the rescue, Hang Chat District Chief Naresrit Udonsri, along with rescue teams, ensured the family received medical evaluations at Hang Chat Hospital. The family expressed their gratitude to officials for their timely assistance. Chief Naresrit highlighted that an investigation would be conducted into the travel agency responsible for the hike to understand why the tour guide had left the family behind. Measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

In another recent event, a 79-year-old Thai woman was found safe in Phitsanulok forest after being missing for three days. She was discovered under a tree near a stream. These incidents underscore the importance of comprehensive safety measures for hiking groups in forested areas.

Key Takeaways

I hope they donated the rescue staff 10'000 for their efforts ! Wasn't it poor weather in that area ? Why go for a hike and the "group idiots" leave them behind ?

That's what jumped out at me right away. Pretty good that the lad isn't carrying around an extra 3 chromosomes in each cell, though his parents might be.
