Traffic police in Vietnam will soon rely solely on image or video evidence for handling violations, aiming to improve transparency in law enforcement starting 2026. This initiative, led by Major General Do Thanh Binh of the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, mandates the use of cameras during inspections.

In a bid to ensure transparency, officers must employ body cameras or have cameras in place when stopping vehicles. All recorded data will be stored according to regulations. Additionally, reports from hotlines or large-scale inspections can prompt police action against infractions like overloading, drink-driving, or drug use.

Traffic officers at intersections will focus solely on directing vehicle flow and will not stop vehicles for checks. Post-peak hours, patrols may document and later verify any violations recorded during their shifts. Complex intersections will have designated teams to handle recurring issues. Furthermore, public announcements will provide details on traffic stops and camera usage, with expressways included in these new measures.

Starting in 2026, penalties for road, railway, and waterway infractions will require visual or electronic proof, or direct recording by law enforcement equipment. This change is expected to enhance the legitimacy of law enforcement actions and build public trust.

Key Takeaways

  • Traffic violations will need image or video evidence by 2026.
  • Officers must use cameras during inspections to ensure transparency.
  • Public announcements will inform on traffic stops and camera use.
