Dry socket pain after molar extraction

Featured Replies

Live in the sticks and went to the local hospital to have a chipped tooth molar removed.  My gums and jaw bone are very healthy so I knew this wasn't going to be  pleasant.  After struggling for 20 minutes and debating sending me off to the city hospital, it popped out.  They ravaged the area where my tooth was and hours later a blood clot was not forming.  Fear set in because I knew from my only other tooth extraction what type of pain was just around the corner and would last for 7-15 days.

Every internet search and AI advised an immediate dental/hospital visit and by no means trying to remedy the situation on your own.  In the past I have had great success ignoring advice from doctors and using common sense.  Docs are great but not always needed.

Laying my head down last night for another sleepless night I decided to just shove some gauze I boiled in water into the hole. Fast forward 20 minutes and all the pain emanating from the exposed bone and nerves practically disappeared.  If I went to hospital that is basically what would have been done but a pain killer would have been added to the gauze.  The pain killer would wear off in hours so why even worry about it.

So why this post? No reason other than to share my joy and share my belief that in most cases we are much better at resolving than doctors.

Wish I had known this.

Had a double osteotomy to remove wisdom teeth growing sideways, not upwards, into my other molars........

The pain was unbelievable, I was offered a single dose of an antibiotic and basically told to get on with it.

I wasn't completely honest.  I wasn't laying my head down to sleep.  I was crying myself to sleep.  My gentle wife told me she wished it was her because she handles pain much better.  Seriously, that is what got me to act and I sent her an AI explanation of what I was going through.

I want to go out shout with joy and hug my neighbors.  Off I go!

BTW, I enjoy your posts even though we are on the opposite side of the political spectrum at the moment. You are funny! I wish I had that dry wit! I could beat you in a running race though !

Ha...very kind of you to say re the wit.

Back to the pain....I walked around our lounge for.....I think four hours......all the time thinking this can't worse, but it did.

I once fractured my forearm in six places.......had no pain killers for 24 hours......the pain was on a par with that.

Onwards and upwards.

What OP did is the standard treatment 'before' leaving the dentist office, after the extraction.   Was when my wisdom teeth were extracted.  Given a script for Percodan, if needed, get filled.

That was about 45 yrs ago.   Unfortunately, wasn't given a script to replace the wisdom.

HaHa - you seem wiser than most so no need for the script. Dry Socket?  You would remember!

Do they not always give you a big wad of gauze to chomp on, and one to go when you have an extraction?

Yes, but in rare instances it doesn't assist in creating a blood clot. If the procedure damages the area much more than most then the odds are greater that dry socket is the result.   If the clot isn't formed, nothing can be done except using meds to diminish the intense pain and putting a barrier between the exposed bone (lots in my case) and nerves.  Granted, I may not be the toughest individual but the pain was intense. I compare it to broken arm that isn't set.

Pulling teeth that's all they know in local hospitals. Went to ours for a premolar that needed fixing, and as a matter of fact he said he had to pull it.  Seven years later it is still there, with a crown.

These days I do most of my dental work at Bumrungrad. Still have 30 of my teeth with one implant. Lost a wisdom tooth as a young adult.

You did the intelligent thing and I took the short cut.  I'm 58 and my gums and teeth are healthy so I figured I had many teeth to spare.  A quick tooth extraction was preferred over multiple visits and over night stays in cities far away.

I think at this point my decision might have been the best but if this gauze I put in the hole causes an infection then off to the city hospital 🙂  So happy at the moment and I'm debating leaving the gauze untouched nor changed until my wife tells me the smell is too much to handle.
