Classes in La Union and Benguet have been suspended following an earthquake on Thursday morning. Mayor Benjamin Magalong ordered the closure from pre-school to K-12, leaving universities to decide independently. This decision came after an earthquake affected the region, although no injuries or structural damages were reported.

The situation has prompted immediate safety inspections. City Building Official Architect Johnny Degay stated that technical personnel are working with school, mall, and building administrators to assess structural integrity. This response reflects cautious measures taken to ensure public safety despite the absence of reported injuries or damages so far.

The neighboring towns in Benguet quickly followed suit, emphasizing regional cooperation in addressing potential risks. This unified approach highlights the importance placed on safety and the preventive measures undertaken in potential disaster situations.

Looking forward, schools and public places will remain under careful scrutiny until integrity checks are completed. The event underscores the need for preparedness and quick response to natural occurrences in the region.

Key Takeaways

  • Classes were suspended for safety assessments after an earthquake.
  • No injuries or damages have been reported; inspections are ongoing.
  • Universities have the discretion to remain open or closed.

The Philippines is having a hard time with natural disasters this year.  Well done to those who decided 'safety first' on these inspections.

My thoughts go out to all those on Mindanao.
