State seismologists have lifted the tsunami warning after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit off the coast of Davao Oriental on Friday, October 10. The earthquake led to a tsunami warning across several Visayas and Mindanao coastal areas, prompting immediate evacuations. A tsunami was detected at the Tandag Surigao Del Sur Sea Level Monitoring Station, measuring about 30 centimeters.

The Department of Science and Technology-PHIVOLCS announced the cancellation of all tsunami warnings, stating that any effects from the initial warning have passed. The earthquake was strongly felt in various localities, leading to the suspension of classes and government work to ensure safety checks. The Office of Civil Defense in the region has declared a Red Alert status due to the situation.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered evacuations to ensure resident safety and assured affected communities that relief efforts were underway. This follows a regional protocol where local governments respond quickly by implementing safety measures and aid distribution. The prompt response highlights a coordinated effort to minimize harm and deliver support.

Looking forward, authorities are expected to continue safety inspections and provide necessary rehabilitation in affected areas. Community leaders and emergency services will likely assess infrastructure for any long-term damage and reinforce readiness for potential aftershocks. The government remains committed to supporting affected populations, emphasizing resilience and preparedness.

Key Takeaways

  • A magnitude 7.5 quake off Davao led to a brief tsunami warning.
