Israel Set to Release Hostages from Gaza on Monday

Israel expects the release of 20 living hostages from Gaza on Monday morning as part of a crucial phase in a ceasefire deal that aims to end the two-year war. The government has announced preparations for these hostages to be transferred safely and promptly. Concurrently, Israel will release nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees, mostly sending them to Gaza or exiling them to neighboring countries.

Previously in talks, Hamas assured a coordinated release with the Red Cross, indicating logistics were underway Sunday night. Out of 48 hostages believed to be in Gaza, only 20 are assumed alive, while efforts continue to locate remains of others, presumed lost in the devastated area. Hospital drills have been conducted to prepare for receiving the freed hostages, ensuring necessary medical care is promptly available.

In a response to this development, US President Donald Trump is expected in Jerusalem to engage with the Knesset and meet families of the hostages. This release forms the first step in Trump's 20-point plan for a lasting end to the conflict, with a ceasefire already in effect since Friday. Trump's involvement includes a meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where leaders from over 20 countries will work towards a permanent truce.

Reactions to this news have been mixed. Some express hope, with thousands gathering in Tel Aviv to celebrate, while others in the occupied West Bank prepare discreetly to welcome their family members back. Human rights bodies continue to scrutinize the conflict, accusing Israel of genocide, claims which the country denies, citing self-defense against attacks led by Hamas militants.

Looking forward, the focus will shift to consolidating this temporary ceasefire into a permanent peace agreement. The US-driven summit in Egypt represents a significant diplomatic effort to achieve this goal, while also ensuring humanitarian aid flows into the battered Gaza Strip.
