Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is under fire as People's Party MP Chutiphong Pipoppinyo questions his commitment to cracking down on transnational scam networks in Cambodia. Pipoppinyo highlighted the PM's reluctance to act against key figures allegedly linked to these scams residing in Thailand.

He referenced a parliament speech by Rangsiman Rome, which mentioned connections between Agriculture Minister Thammanat Prompao and South African tycoon Benjamin Mauerberger, linked to Cambodian strongman Hun Sen.

The alleged involvement of Mauerberger, named in the US “Dismantle Foreign Scam Syndicates Act,” raises concerns. Chutiphong claims the PM avoids responding to enquiries about scam operations or their ties to Thai officials, urging Thailand to join global efforts against these networks. The House National Security Affairs Committee provides information to assist the PM, yet his office has not taken any action.

The Pheu Thai party suggested fresh approaches to combat scam networks and money laundering. Former PM Prasert Chantararuangthong noted past efforts such as disrupting internet and oil supplies to scams in Myanmar and reaching agreements with Cambodia to combat online scams. However, the government-established ‘Super Board’ to address these issues remains inactive.

Deputy Director-General Pol Cpt Surawut Rangsai said the Department of Special Investigation received an urgent letter from Thammanat Prompao’s advisor, checking for any criminal ties of Mauerberger in Thailand. The DSI reported no criminal record for Mauerberger in the country, leaving future actions uncertain.

Key Takeaways

  • PM Anutin's stance on crackdowns is questioned amid scam network concerns.
  • Alleged associates like Mauerberger are scrutinised for links to major scams.
  • Government efforts and collaboration with neighbouring nations are ongoing.
