Two fire volunteers were assaulted by two men during their response to a blaze in Port Area, Manila, on Friday, October 17, 2025. One of the volunteers revealed that the attack occurred while they were waiting for a water supply. He stated, “I was beaten because I was waiting for water. They hit me because there was no water.”

In addition to being beaten, the two volunteers were reportedly struck on the back with a piece of lumber. “There were two of them. I was hit with a two-by-two on my back, and so was my companion. I ran away immediately,” said the victim. The fire, which reached the second alarm, was extinguished by 2:22 PM.

Authorities are still investigating the extent of the damage, including the number of homes destroyed and families affected by the fire. This incident follows another reported attack on firefighters while responding to a blaze in Tondo, Manila, on September 14. During that incident, a fire truck was pelted with rocks by residents, shattering the vehicle's windows.

The previous attack occurred as firefighters attempted to control a rapidly spreading fire that destroyed a residential area and displaced over 1,000 residents. The fire truck involved belonged to a volunteer brigade from outside Manila. Fortunately, none of its occupants were injured.

This series of attacks highlights the challenges faced by fire responders in certain communities, where they sometimes encounter hostility while performing their duties.

Key Takeaways
