Vietnam Airlines has requested more flexibility in transitioning operations to Long Thanh International Airport to avoid needing additional aircraft. This request, communicated to the Ministry of Construction and other agencies, addresses concerns over the division of operations between Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh, which is slated to open in mid-2026. The Ministry’s plan suggests Long Thanh should handle 80% of international and 10% of domestic flights to Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Airlines supports the overall strategy but emphasizes the need for flexibility initially to optimize resources. The airline cites a global aircraft shortage, exacerbated by the recall of Pratt & Whitney engines from Airbus A321s and ongoing disruptions in the aircraft repair and maintenance supply chain. Immediate transition of all international routes over 1,000 km to Long Thanh could lead to further complications and necessitate additional narrow-body aircraft.

As a solution, Vietnam Airlines proposes relocating long-haul routes to the Americas, Europe, and Australia to Long Thanh right away, while gradually shifting Asian routes over time. Notably, Long Thanh Airport spans 5,000 hectares and involves an investment of VND336.63 trillion (US$13.3 billion). Initially, it will accommodate 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually, with plans to expand to 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo by 2050.

Construction is nearing completion, and recent calibration test flights with a Beechcraft B300 aircraft have been executed. The focus now is on ensuring a seamless transition and maximizing efficiency without compromising operational stability for carriers like Vietnam Airlines.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam Airlines seeks flexibility to avoid acquiring additional aircraft.
  • Long Thanh is proposed to handle most international flights upon opening.
  • The airline suggests a staggered move of Asian routes to the new airport.
