Bangkok’s Major Bus Terminals to Stay, Relocation Scrapped

The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that Bangkok's three main intercity bus terminals - Mo Chit 2, Ekkamai, and Sai Tai - will not relocate to Bang Sue Grand Station as previously considered. Instead, plans focus on enhancing the existing facilities and transport connectivity. Deputy Transport Minister Mallika Jiraphanwanich announced the decision aligns with the government's policy to improve infrastructure under Transport Co., Ltd.

Transport Co. managing director, Atthawit Rakchamroon, revealed that redevelopment plans for the Mo Chit 2 terminal are advancing. Situated on an 80-rai plot, the project has received a 39-million-baht budget for planning and design, with implementation expected to cost 3.6 billion baht. This proposal aims to enhance service efficiency and has received board approval. It will be submitted for further approval to the Ministry of Transport in November 2025, with hopes for construction to start in 2027 and finish by 2029.

Redevelopment will be executed in three phases, including a new terminal building, bus platforms, and parking areas. Facilities will also provide for parcel delivery services, minibuses, and electric bus charging points. Adjacent areas will be developed for passenger comfort, including waiting zones. This development reflects the ministry's focus on modernising existing terminals rather than relocating them.

Previously, a study by the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning explored moving these terminals during former Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungruangkit's tenure. However, the current administration has placed this idea on hold, aiming to improve the integration and convenience of the existing system for passengers.

Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok's main bus terminals will not be relocated but upgraded.
  • Mo Chit 2 redevelopment is planned for 2027-2029 with a 3.6 billion baht budget.
  • Revamped facilities aim to improve connectivity and passenger experience.

Makes sense... they are well placed at the moment, just need an upgrade

I have never travelled by bus but if you travel from the South to the North does that mean you have to get off the Southern bus, cross the city somehow, then get on the Northern bus ?

I've used Ekkamai many times; it's well connected with the BTS and other buses, so is easy to use.  I used Mo Chit 2 once and couldn't see an easy transfer to the MRT (maybe my fault) apart from walking.  That's one of the more important areas for me; an easy interchange between buses and rail.

I remember when initially announced many years ago they wanted to move the main bus terminal way outside of the city in Rangsit.  It made zero sense.  Actually, in many provincial capitals they did move bus terminals to locations far outside of the cities they served.  Arrivals are at the mercy of the local taxi mafias.  Again, zero sense to it.

Mo Chit 2 is hard to reach.

And I don't like my luggage to be xrayed by some old machine.

Mo Chit: Have to take either taxi or mc to the MRT (KampengPhet station I think it is).  Probably an extra 100-200 Baht for that.

From the city , or inner city.

Bus 77 used to go there , but last time I waited 1,5 hours , no bus .

Thanks.  That additional cost doesn't matter much to me (it's only around 5USD or 3.5GBP), but I still prefer either a short walk or a public transport connection.

I walked to Mo Chit BTS (Chatuckak MRT), just under 30 mins, as BTS was better for me.  I just looked, is the same distance as the station you mentioned.

Not for me when I lived in Lanna and Isaan. Absolutely ideal.

I could get a taxi to take me into the City (for the British Embassy and Passport Office).

Buses all conveniently called at Future Park, Rangsit for Don Mueang Airport.

Well , good for you then 👍

I guess they are saving money by not moving the bus terminals. The one at Mo Chit is very large and expensive. Such a pity they aren't linked by BTS or MRT.

That’s good,  now I don’t have to retrain my brain when headed to the terminals.

The idea of centralising the 3 peripheral bus station into the old railway station at Bang Sue for ease of passenger logistics, overlooks one key issue, Bangkok traffic.

Mind you, if Thailand had a visionary such as the old "Two Jags", aka Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, installing a few red lane bus only routes across Bangkok would speed up bus efficiency, but at the greater loss of all other road traffic.

Going to/from Ekamai to Pattaya often involves sitting in Bangkok traffic for up to an hour.  I would prefer to see it moved further out to avoid that.

correct, you can get off the bus at Udomsuk. Going back to Pattaya its still best to get on at Ekamai, there is another station on the Bang Na/Trad but getting there involves a taxi so no gain.

A lot of world cities have more than one train station but few have the disconnect for long-distance buses. Mochit2 to SaiTai, an hour at least in traffic.  KhonSongEkamai to Mochit2 may not be so bad but to SaiTai?!?
