MS shoots itself in the foot. Again.

I have W10 running, and have no intention of going to W11.  Then I saw this (note that this article was updated a few days ago):

https://www.engadget.com/computing/microsoft-has-ended-windows-10-support-but-heres-how-to-get-an-extra-year-for-free-125118044.html

So I went for the latest update last week.  Seemed ok.  Then came across this:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2025/10/21/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-millions-of-windows-users/

Hmm, I'm not having any issues, so I brushed it off and bookmarked it.  And then yesterday some tried & true programs I've been using for years started throwing messages about corrupted .dll files in the Windows systems files.  Spent about 20 minutes sleuthing and rebooting to no avail, so I reloaded a backup from last month.  Back to normal (fingers crossed).

Users going online to fix update issues are being warned to stop. “Don’t try your luck with internet solutions. They don’t work.” Instead, wait for the update.

I can't say that this was the problem, but thought someone might find it helpful if I passed this on.

It took a week a daily reboots for it to reveal itself.

First off I agree with your sentiments on Win 11....

However the October 14 update was the last one that everybody could get irrespective of the extra year for Win 10. Are you suggesting that was the reason for the issues you faced? If so a timely warning thanks.

I am actually waiting until  https://www.askwoody.com/ site reckons there should be no issues before installing as I have done for the last 18 months or so.

I only mention all this as the Forbes article you reference only really talks about the issues with Win 11 not 10 which have also been mentioned on other sites. I have not come across any other specific mentions of issues on Win 10 from the October update yet.
