What is Behind Right Wing Violence?

What is Behind Right Wing Violence?

According to Trump’s own Homeland Security Department and the FBI in term 1, 70% of all domestic terror attacks since 9/11 were carried out by far right groups and individuals.

That fact became an inconvenient truth during a Senate Hearing with then-Homeland Chief Kirstjen Nielsen during Trump’s first term. Nielsen was talking solely about Moslem or left-wing terror until Senator Harris began quoting from the report produced by Nielsen’s office and Christopher Wray’s FBI.

So even the Trump Administration knew where the majority root cause of domestic terror came from---the far right, such as white supremacists, Neo Nazis, groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, and various so-called militia groups.

Nowhere was the source of domestic terror clearer than on 6 January 2021, when a Trumpian mob attacked the US Capitol in an attempt to overthrow the election as well as hang the Vice President. Trump had not only called them to DC for the 6th via his Tweets (“It’ll be WILD!”, he wrote), but he riled them with a speech during which he used the word “fight” 37 times and “peaceful” but once. Unless he is an abject idiot (quite possible), he knew full well his mob would engage in violence. He subsequently watched and did absolutely nothing for 180 minutes while Capitol police were beaten and bear sprayed, a gallows was set up to hang the VP, and the crowd chanted “Hang Mike Pence”. Trump had sole authority to call out the National Guard---something he now does to confront peaceful protesters---but he failed to call the Guard on 6 January, despite watching the mayhem live on TV and being asked by his Chief of Staff Meadows to call the Guard.

So what is behind the far right’s penchant for terror and violence?

A lot of it can be laid at the feet of Trump. His constant referring to people from south of the border as “rapists and murderers” is enough to set many people off. Patrick Crusius walked into an El Paso Walmart and shot 45 Hispanics, killing 23. Robert Bowers entered a Pittsburgh synagogue that aided South and Central American migrants and murdered 11, including the rabbi. Cesar Sayoc sent bombs to 13 people Trump had called “enemies”. Christopher Hansson built a spreadsheet of politicians and celebrities he planned to kill, all of whom had been named by Trump as enemies or critics. Hansson even used the nicknames Trump had given these people, such as Pocahontas for Senator Warren.

Trump’s hate speech also contributed to other crimes and potential crimes. He railed against judges and courts, and that led to the son of a New Jersey judge being gunned down in the judge’s home. His hate directed toward people such as Judge Merchan or mother and daughter vote counters in Georgia resulted in death threats. His rants against other critics, such as former DCI Brennan, Senator Schiff, SC Jack Smith and others have gotten each of them death threats. Trump’s rants against former Speaker Pelosi encouraged David DePape to break into Pelosi’s home and beat her husband with a hammer. Trump was highly critical of Michigan Gov Whitmer, calling via Tweet to “LIBERATE MICHIGAN”. Two weeks later armed right wingers attacked the Michigan State Capitol. A group calling itself the Wolverine Watchmen then planned to kidnap and execute Gov Whitmer. It's not a coincidence.

It's clear what sets these terrorists off…Trump. But what is behind the losers tendency toward violence? What is wrong with these people that they are susceptible to Trump’s siren song of violence and retribution on his behalf?

By and large these far right terrorists are losers. They have led failed lives. They are poorly educated, have achieved nothing of note since birth, and carry an anger born of frustration over their failure and mediocrity. They are ripe to be influenced and led.

With years of hate speech and racist comments. Trump has given these miscreants a voice, as well as the all clear. He has given them an excuse for their failure and also provided various people or groups to blame, whether Hispanics, Blacks, Moslems or Democrats. Unable to accept personal responsibility for their own mediocrity, Trump gives these losers a way to fight back, albeit not at anyone who is actually responsible. When Trump uses his hate speech to go against critics, these losers think Trump is “owning the libs”. They live vicariously through Trump. It is a revenge for always being on the lower end….not tops in their class in schooldays, not sports stars, no date with the prom queen, and a general level of failure that carried though into dead end jobs, low pay, and general invisibility in society.

These people have anger and resentment that has been building up since they were young. Of course their miserable lives are their own fault, but they are incapable of seeing reality.  Their anger merely needs a spark to explode, and Trump repeatedly provides that spark with his own hate speech.

The tendency toward violence has long been there among the far right, but Trump has exacerbated it with his continual hate speech. It set off Patrick Crusius. It set off Robert Bowers. It set off Cesar Sayoc. It set off Christopher Hansson. It set off David DePape.  It set off the 6 January terrorists.

Within many MAGA cultists is another Bowers or Crusius waiting to come out. Trump keeps provided the impetus, as his late night rage Tweets continue to inspire the worst elements of society to perform violent and evil acts.

"I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard."

Peacefully and Patriotically. ie not burning and looting cities. Not violently seizing city districts and having actual insurrections like CHAZ.

I look forward to you making a factually accurate post one day. Although I suspect it will be a long wait.

You’ve confused your left from the right. It’s that simple.
