ICE Detains British Commentator Sami Hamdi Over Israel Criticism

British commentator Sami Hamdi was detained by US federal immigration officers during his speaking tour. A Muslim advocacy group flagged the incident, describing it as retaliation for Hamdi's critical views on Israel. The US administration argues the decision highlights their policy of not allowing entry to individuals they accuse of undermining American safety.

Hamdi, known for analysing Middle Eastern developments on British TV, was taken into custody at San Francisco International Airport. He had previously spoken at a CAIR event in Sacramento and was slated for another appearance in Florida. CAIR has denounced the detention as a violation of free speech rights, branding it an "abduction" and pressing for Hamdi's release.

The British government has stated they are in contact with local authorities about Hamdi's situation. His wife reported that he has been held without legal or consular aid for more than 24 hours. The situation unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing tensions following the conflict in Gaza, where a UN inquiry accused Israel of genocide, a claim Israel denies.

The arrest also follows lobbying by conservative activist Laura Loomer, who claims to have pressured governmental departments over Hamdi, alleging links to terror and Hamas. The Trump administration's stance, as reiterated by the State Department, maintains that visas may be revoked for individuals perceived as supporting terrorism.

Recent actions by the US government have similarly targeted other pro-Palestinian figures, stirring legal concerns. Notably, a federal judge criticised the administration's actions as an assault on First Amendment rights, although this ruling is pending appeal.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sami Hamdi's detention is linked to US policy on perceived security threats.
  • CAIR advocates for Hamdi's rights, citing free speech violations.
  • Legal debates continue over US immigration actions related to activists.

Keep him.

I approve of this. Free speech means free to say what I like, not what makes me annoyed.

I approve of this.

Free speech doesn't mean free of consequences.
He's not a native American so both his citizenship and place in America are in jeopardy, as it should be

"...policy of not allowing entry to individuals they accuse of undermining American safety."

and yet they will probably let Trump back into country. His illegal killings of foreign nationals without charges or arrests could lead some to give back some of the same: "what's good for the goose is good for the gander"

Why? Only the gullible believe he supports terrorism.

Trump poses infinitely more of a clear and present danger to America than this guy. They just simply have a total and complete intolerance of criticism, or anyone who disagrees with their policies. America now is truly the opposite of a democracy, and free speech no longer is tolerated.

Those laws apply to American citizens.  And even then, there are limits to free speech such as the old "yelling fire in a theater", inciting riots, etc.

Just as if one is a foreigner in Thailand.  There are restrictions and policies on what speech is allowed.  It is the right of a country isn't it?

uh because his free speech rights are not the same as a American citizen may have and his speech apparently is being evaluated as being hateful or not in the best interests of America.  These things happen.  go ahead and criticize the monarchy in Thailand and after you get out of jail or back from being deported to your home country let us know how that worked out for you

Rights that apply to visitors:

Due process: All individuals within U.S. borders are protected by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, meaning they cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property without a fair legal process.
Right to counsel: Visitors have the right to have an attorney present during any hearing before an immigration judge.
Protection against unreasonable searches and seizures: This right generally applies to everyone, including visitors.
Freedom of speech, religion, and assembly: The First Amendment protects these rights for all people in the United States, regardless of citizenship status.
Right to remain silent: Visitors can refuse to answer questions from law enforcement about anything other than their name, immigration status, or ID.

you don't even know your own laws.

A number of American citizens have been banned from entry into the UK based on their political beliefs. Nobody enjoys the right to enter any country other than that of which they're a citizen.

Strange example, unless thai citizens are allowed to criticise the monarchy.

Based on their beliefs or based on their actions/purpose of the visit?

Examples please.

Just look at this list. It's not just Americans but other people the UK bans because of political beliefs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_banned_from_entering_the_United_Kingdom

If he's not a US citizen or permanent resident, they don't have to allow him entry.

Go to the wiki link I put a couple of posts above and you'll see the UK deports and bans from entry to the UK based on the very same reasons as Homeland Security gives for deporting the "commentator."

Of course that's not good, he shouldn't have been allowed to board his flight in the first place.
