A roll-on, roll-off (RORO) sea vessel, M/V Lite Ferry 10, ran aground near Larena port in Siquijor province, affecting its travel route. Fortunately, no oil spill was detected, but some coral damage was reported. The incident stranded 359 passengers and 45 crew members, all of whom were rescued safely.

The vessel was en route from Tagbilaran City, Bohol, to Plaridel, Misamis Occidental via Larena, when it ran aground just before midnight on October 25. Coast Guard officials, led by Lt. Riza Genebleza, are keeping a close watch on the situation to prevent potential further damage. Scuba divers conducted an underwater inspection and found coral damage, though the ship’s hull was intact.

Passengers affected by the grounding were provided safety, with many continuing their journey to Plaridel while others remain in Siquijor due to cargo constraints. Lite Shipping Corp. is supplying necessary provisions for those still stranded. The Coast Guard has oil spill response teams on standby should conditions deteriorate.

Efforts to refloat the vessel were made around midnight on Monday but only moved it forward slightly. The Coast Guard plans another attempt during a high tide on Tuesday midnight. Meanwhile, the shipping company has lodged a marine protest with the Maritime Industry Authority as required by regulation.

Looking ahead, the focus remains on successfully refloating the vessel and ensuring all remaining passengers reach their destinations. Continuous monitoring will assess any environmental impact on the local marine life and determine necessary actions.

Key Takeaways

  • M/V Lite Ferry 10 ran aground with no oil spill detected.
