Severe rainfall in Da Nang City, from October 24 to 28, has led to widespread landslides and flash floods, destroying 28 homes in mountainous areas and submerging over 65,000 homes in the plains. The deluge resulted in 500-700 mm of rain, with some areas receiving up to 900 mm due to cold air, tropical convergence, and easterly winds. Tra Tan Commune experienced the most damage, with flash floods sweeping away all 11 houses, though no casualties were reported due to prior evacuations.

In addition to Tra Tan, 10 houses in Tra Leng, Tra Doc, and Tra Giap were lost to landslides. On Tuesday, a 42-year-old man was trapped in a landslide while operating an excavator on Dong Truong Son Road but was rescued with injuries. The incident prompted local authorities to cordon off the affected areas to prevent further incidents. Landslides also damaged ten houses in Song Y and Ngoc Tu hamlets, but no injuries were reported as everyone had been evacuated.

Floods heavily impacted downstream regions of the Vu Gia - Thu Bon River system, with Dai Loc and Nam Phuoc Communes facing severe inundation. Nong Son Commune saw floodwaters reaching up to four meters, affecting 1,340 homes. Though water levels in the upper river regions began receding on Tuesday, downstream areas continued to see rising floods.

Hoi An ancient town faced significant flooding, with over 80% submerged, and rising waters led to one reported drowning incident. The flooding caused extensive agricultural and infrastructural damage, including the destruction of 270 hectares of rice fields and severe road damage. Further rain was anticipated from October 28 through 29, causing concern over additional flooding, though forecasts indicated a gradual decrease starting October 30.

Key Takeaways

  • Over 65,000 homes in Da Nang City are submerged due to heavy rainfall.
  • Tra Tan Commune experienced severe damage but no casualties due to early evacuations.
  • Hoi An ancient town faced catastrophic flooding, impacting infrastructure and agriculture.
