Full Moon Party Axed in Thailand Amid National Mourning

Full Moon Party Koh Pha Ngan

Koh Phangan – The popular Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Beach, scheduled for November 5, has been cancelled. This decision follows the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit on October 25, aged 93. In honour of her legacy, Thailand is now in a national mourning period, resulting in a halt to significant public gatherings.

The event organisers have confirmed the cancellation, stating, "The Full Moon Party will not take place this month." The Jungle Experience event, originally set for November 4, has also been called off. Meanwhile, the traditional Loy Krathong celebrations are still on, but they will reflect cultural and respectful practices during this mourning period.

Preparations for the Full Moon Party usually commence a year in advance, beginning each December. These plans include managing logistics such as international DJ appointments, safety measures, and infrastructure setup. Despite the short notice of the cancellation, these efforts point out the relevance of the event to Koh Phangan.

During the mourning period, regular activities in Thailand see marked changes. Both locals and tourists are advised to wear modest clothing in black, white, or muted colours, avoiding bright or festive apparel. Entertainment venues often lower music volumes, halt live shows, or cancel parties completely to show respect.

Government properties have flags at half-mast, with public broadcasts on television and radio shifting to more sobering content. Visitors are encouraged to maintain decorum, particularly at temples and royal locations, by avoiding loud or festive behaviour.

While travel and events are not entirely banned, organisers must adhere to the national mourning mood. These steps illustrate Thailand’s deep respect for the monarchy and highlight the nation's cultural focus on unity and respect during such times.

The next Full Moon Party is anticipated in December 2025, kicking off the high season. Travellers should check ferry schedules and consider alternative island activities.

  • Thailand is observing a national mourning period following the Queen Mother’s passing.
