A dramatic partial collapse of the 13-century ‎Torre dei Conti in central Rome trapped workers and triggered an urgent rescue. Early on Monday morning the historic tower, located near the Colosseum and built by the Conti family, suffered two major structural failures some 90 minutes apart. Videos circulating on social media captured clouds of dust erupting from the building as masonry fell.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene when the second collapse occurred while firefighters were already working on the site using aerial ladders. One Romanian worker was pulled from the rubble and rushed by ambulance to hospital in “serious condition,” according to Rome’s police chief. Two other workers were also injured—one with head injuries, another with minor wounds—and several onlookers described the terrifying scene of falling stone and structural debris.

The Torre dei Conti first rose in the 1200s as a fortified residence of a powerful family connected to Pope Innocent III, and it has undergone previous damage due to earthquakes and collapses. At the time of the incident it was undergoing façade restoration funded in part by the EU’s post-pandemic recovery programme. Authorities have cordoned off surrounding areas including the busy tourist zones around Piazza Venezia and the Roman Forum for safety.

Key Takeaways:

The partial collapse of Rome’s historic Torre dei Conti trapped and injured workers amid restoration work.

Emergency responders worked carefully amid ongoing structural failures, rescuing one man in serious condition and attending to additional casualties.

The tower, built in the 13th century and already once quake-damaged, was under EU-funded renovation when the incident occurred.
