Vietnam and China have intensified their joint efforts to curb illegal cross-border movements by leveraging science and technology in immigration management. At a recent conference, officials from both countries lauded their Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, highlighting its role in enhancing travel and cooperation. Despite eased travel policies, there has been a notable increase in illegal activities along the border.

In recent months, Việt Nam has seen a surge in cross-border traffic, resulting in a rise in immigration violations, including illegal entries and exits. Lieutenant General Phạm Đăng Khoa of Việt Nam’s Immigration Department noted that the current openness has facilitated travel but also brought challenges. Cooperation between the two nations has been pivotal in managing these issues.

HCM City has emerged as a key transit point due to its bustling foreign presence, with over 4.2 million foreign temporary residences recorded since early 2025. Police have uncovered 146 illegal entries and exits involving 431 individuals, including 195 Chinese nationals. Sophisticated methods used by offenders include using ambulances to transport migrants and concealing activities through layered financial transactions.

China's representatives acknowledged the effectiveness of current border management strategies but stressed the evolving complexity of cross-border crimes. Both sides expressed a commitment to continue enhancing cooperation, information sharing, and joint campaigns to address these challenges. The conference underscores the mutual benefits of tighter border security, which supports national security and promotes trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges.

Key Takeaways:

  • Việt Nam and China are collaborating to enhance border control, utilising advanced technology.
  • HCM City has become a major focus due to increased foreign residency and illegal migration routes.
  • Both nations are committed to ongoing cooperation to tackle the evolving complexity of cross-border crimes.
