If you intend to make Thailand you're home, it's impolite and inexcusable not to learn the language.

And in return they will accept you as a Thai and open a path to citizenship for you.  Right?

Wrong - you'll be a second-class non-citizen and a foreigner, a "Farang," for as long as you live here.  Well unless you are a foreign woman married to a Thai guy - yeah sure, learn Thai - you've a path to citizenship after three years of marriage.  If you're a guy married to a Thai woman, even if you have a Thai child? You'll be a second-class non-citizen and a foreigner, a "Farang," for as long as you live here, so why bother. Sucks to be you.

I speak passable Thai and read at a grade school level.  It's good enough.

Not simply to make deeper connections with a Thai lady, it's important for all sections of Thai society.

Once a Thai person ascertains you don't speak Thai, most likely the next question they will ask you is how long you have lived here.  If you haven't just arrived, you should feel deeply ashamed when you answer that with anything over a year here.

That's funny.  Thanks for the humor of the day.

I am an alien in LOS, can be thrown out at any time, which I find impolite and inexcusable..🤔

I just did a visa extension, I was sent away because they didn't like my application photo, they said I must wear a shirt and tie, of course I had to obey.

Was sent across the road to a Kodak shop, told them shirt and tie, was told to sit down, I had no tie, he took the photo, when I got them, in the photos I had a jacket, shirt and tie on, all done via an app, now I thought that was funny..........🤭

They pull new "regulations" out of "where the sun don't shine" on a consistent basis.  I've come to the conclusion that there is a department dedicated to making up new nonsense rules to harass long-stay, male, non-imm visa holders and those making extensions, especially those of us on marriage extensions. I just roll with the punches nowadays.

All written in the female pronoun.  Nice.  Are you a gal?  If not start with ผม and end with ครับ.  Learn to read some Thai - it is useful.

You use the word “Farang” as if it’s an insult.

It’s not and never has been.

The first visitors here were French, Farang-sed is their pronunciation of Francais and its shortened to Farang to include all white skinned foreigners.

They have a different word for Arabic types.

I am here permanently now.

Plenty others do also.

Nice long winded excuse though for reasons not to learn the lingo.

I think you are a classic example, the poster boy, for someone who struggles because of your attitude.

Your visa extension stories are hilarious.

Personally I have found it very easy.

Don’t forget your pink umbrella.

I have never heard of anyone else having to wear a Thai for a visa extension, I think they were teaching you a lesson.

Good on them.

The visa system is very easy here.

I just showed up, filled out a few forms, deposited some cash into a athai bank account and will probably see out my days here.

Too easy.

What I said stands for anyone who intends to make Thailand their home.

Visa status is irrelevant.

In that case living here for 40-50 yrs is also irrelevant. The day your documents are not complete or money is short in the bank, you will be booted out instantly

Imagine spending 10 years learning Thai and then being kicked out of the country due to changes to the immigration laws.

Just learn numbers, no chilli, where's the toilet. Shag the women. Don't try to understand women.

You can imagine all you like.

How many people do you know of that that has happened to?

If you live here and can not speak Thai you will just be considered the Village Idiot and will wrongly assume the word farang is racist.

But that’s absolutely possible. Or do you really think the immigration officers would make an exception just because one knows Thai? More likely, they’ll be laughing at him as he babbles broken Thai about his regrets in the Suvarnabhumi detention center.

  • Communication Breakdown: The inability to understand or express oneself can create a sense of helplessness and isolation.
  • Misinterpretation: Without language skills, it's easy to misinterpret non-verbal cues, tones of voice, or general situations, leading to suspicion or fear about others' intentions [1].
  • Reduced Control: A lack of language proficiency can make individuals feel they have less control over their surroundings and interactions, which can heighten stress and vigilance.
  • Social Isolation: Language barriers can hinder social integration, leading people to feel excluded and potentially fostering a sense of being an "outsider" or "different" [1].
These heightened feelings of stress and vulnerability can manifest as behaviors that may resemble paranoia, but they are generally situational responses to a difficult set of circumstances rather than a clinical condition [1].

Sure. You don't know Thais hate Kymers, blacks and talk bad about farangs.

Because you are illiterate you don’t really know how Thais think, you just imagine what you think they think.

I am just reading a thread now about what Thais think of black hookers working illegally in Thailand.

You are a flog.
