The Manila City Government has announced the establishment of Halal Town in Quiapo, aimed at promoting culture, livelihood, and unity among the Muslim community. The project, described as historic, will enhance infrastructure and support economic growth. On November 3rd, Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, Vice Mayor Chi Atienza, and Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman visited the site to inspect and discuss the plans.

This initiative follows plans to rehabilitate the Golden Mosque Complex in preparation for the upcoming ASEAN Summit next year. The project has garnered support from the national government and financial backing from the UAE. Secretary Pangandaman praised the project's concept, emphasizing the government's readiness to assist in its development.

"The UAE government's funding for the Golden Mosque's improvement is a significant step," Pangandaman stated, highlighting the connection with directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos. The mosque's restoration traces back to its original construction during President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s era.

Mayor Domagoso expressed gratitude for this support, viewing Halal Town as both a local and national economic opportunity. The endeavor aligns with the city’s goals, particularly ahead of Manila hosting the ASEAN Summit. Efforts include Vice Mayor Atienza’s study tour to Malaysia to learn best practices in halal trade, emphasizing the billion-dollar potential of this industry.

According to Domagoso, Quiapo embodies Manila's cultural duality, with Halal Town fostering peaceful coexistence between communities. "Quiapo is symbolic of Muslims and the Nazareno," he stated, appreciating the harmony between Christians and Muslims living and working together in the area.
