Vietnam is coordinating the repatriation of over 70 citizens following a clampdown on online scams in Myanmar. The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed its embassies in Myanmar and Thailand to assist in the process, as confirmed by spokesperson Phạm Thu Hằng. The citizens crossed from Myanmar into Thailand after local authorities attempted to dismantle online scam networks.

The Vietnamese embassies are actively collaborating with local Thai and Myanmar authorities to gather information and verify identities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to protect Vietnamese citizens abroad, amid increasing cases of scams promising high-paying jobs without requirements. Citizens have been advised to verify job details and recruiter information to avoid falling victim to scams.

Hằng emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and relying on official labor dispatch organizations for employment opportunities. For further assistance, Vietnamese citizens can contact embassy hotlines. Recent events underscore Vietnam's commitment to strengthening its legal framework for telecommunications and cybersecurity, aiming to protect its citizens from online threats.

Vietnam is also enhancing international cooperation against cybercrime, participating in global conventions like the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside other relevant agencies, is working to establish international partnerships to combat organized and high-tech crime.

Looking forward, Vietnam is monitoring developments and preparing response measures to safeguard citizens abroad. Additionally, international solidarity has been evident through support for Vietnam’s disaster recovery efforts in the aftermath of recent crises. Countries and organizations worldwide have extended financial aid and other resources to assist Vietnam, especially in regions hardest hit by disasters.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam aids in repatriating citizens after scams in Myanmar.
