Authorities in Satun province have discovered four bodies floating near Tarutao Island, prompting an urgent investigation into the cause of their deaths. Officials are pursuing two main lines of inquiry, whether the incident was the result of a boat sinking caused by rough seas or if the victims were deceived into jumping into the sea as part of an illegal migrant smuggling operation.

The bodies were found on November 9, 2025, during a coordinated search involving multiple agencies. Satun Marine Police located two male bodies off the island’s eastern coast, near Ao Phon Chai. A further two, a man and a boy estimated to be about 12 years old, were discovered by the Royal Thai Navy’s Maritime Enforcement Command Centre (Thai-MECC Satun) at Ao Makham, on the island’s south-western side. The discovery has intensified efforts to locate any remaining missing persons or possible survivors.

Officials have yet to confirm the victims’ identities or nationalities. Preliminary intelligence suggests the deaths could be linked to either a boat capsizing amid strong Andaman Sea currents or a human smuggling attempt gone wrong, in which migrants may have been forced or misled into jumping overboard. Authorities have cautioned that both scenarios remain under active investigation, with no conclusions drawn at this stage.

Satun Governor Sakra Kapilakanchana has ordered all relevant agencies, including the Royal Thai Navy, Marine Police, Thai-MECC, the Tarutao National Park Authority, and coastal security units, to intensify search operations both on land and at sea. Search teams are focusing on the southern coastline, where currents may have carried additional bodies ashore. Officials are collecting forensic evidence and transporting the deceased for identification and autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.

Authorities expect the search to continue over the coming days as teams expand the operation area and await laboratory results. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether a criminal investigation will follow and could prompt a renewed crackdown on migrant smuggling operations along Thailand’s southern coast.
