Tariff Regulations Even Worse For Businesses Than Tariffs?

Featured Replies

Trump's tariffs are costing companies. Keeping up with them may cost even more.

Businesses from Wall Street to main street are struggling to comply with President Donald Trump’s byzantine tariff regime, driving up costs and counteracting, for some, the benefits of the corporate tax cuts Republicans passed earlier this year.

Trump has ripped up the U.S. tariff code over the past year, replacing a decades-old system that imposed the same tariffs on imports from all but a few countries with a vastly more complicated system of many different tariff rates depending on the origin of imported goods....

And the still unknown outcomes of ongoing trade investigations that could lead to additional tariffs on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, critical minerals, commercial aircraft, polysilicon, unmanned aircraft systems, wind turbines, medical products and robotics and industrial machinery continue to make it difficult for many companies to plan for the future.

Trump manufactures overseas, every opportunity he gets, to save money. Bibles, baseball caps, and likely countless other things. So, calling him very disingenuous would be an understatement.

The irony is that Trump is harming the US most of all. Do you realise Trump’s tariffs are basically a form of tax on US citizens? And that it is a regressive tax, because rich or poor, Americans will pay the same amount of tax when they buy an import on the tariff list. The US government is collecting this tax. The US government would do better to raise income taxes on the most well off people in its society. People who can afford the tax more easily. It’s a far more equitable and effective way to raise taxes. It’s how governments do it in well run countries.

Trump lies when he says other nations will pay for them. He lies when he says companies will pay for them. Consumers will pay, so it becomes a tax. Be bold, big Don and for once be honest. It is a tax hike. And it could slow down the economy and result in a massive loss of jobs, and major inflation. Very dumb policy.

Mr. Trump has contended that his tariffs would lower inflation, because they would increase manufacturing and the productive capacity of the United States. But most economists say that tariffs of the size he is proposing would increase consumer prices and add to inflation.

A wave of frustration over prolonged inflation helped power Trump to victory in November, and a majority of respondents -- 58% -- said inflation would be a major factor in deciding their vote in future elections. But just 32% approved of the job Trump was doing on inflation.

Views of the economy by households deteriorated this month to the lowest level in over a year, according to a widely followed survey by the University of Michigan.

Trump is failing, and instead of a improving America he's diminishing America's influence by the day, and making America less relevant to the world.
