Police in Nan have taken into custody a 36-year-old man accused of confining a grandmother and her six-month-old grandchild after their relative missed a single loan repayment. The suspect, identified only as Mr Bang, surrendered to officers at Phu Phiang Police Station on 17 November 2025 following a multi-agency search. The incident prompted immediate concern in the community, as the victims were found locked inside their home and unable to seek help.

The case originated on 12 November 2025 when officers from Phu Phiang Police Station received a report that members of an illegal loan-sharking group had gone to a house in Muang Chang, Phu Phiang district, Nan province, to collect repayment. When they did not find the borrower at home, the group allegedly locked the house from the outside with the grandmother and infant inside. The village head later discovered the situation and forced the lock open to free them.

According to the grandmother, her daughter had borrowed 5,000 baht from a Facebook-based loan group to buy milk and diapers, agreeing to repay 300 baht daily for 20 days. She had already paid 11 instalments but had missed one payment because she had not yet received her wages. This prompted the debt collectors to visit the home, ultimately leading to the alleged confinement.

Police launched an urgent manhunt after Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Dares Kanya ordered a special taskforce to track the suspect. Officers learned that the accused had rented a room in Mueang Nan district, but he had already fled the area by the time they arrived. Investigators from Provincial Police Region 5 later determined that he was hiding in another province and applied pressure until he returned to surrender.

Naewna reported that during questioning, the suspect admitted to providing illegal loans but denied locking the victims inside their home. Police charged him with six offences: operating an unlicensed lending business; demanding interest above the legal limit; conducting unregistered debt-collection activities; using threats or violence to collect debt; trespassing on a residence and disturbing occupancy; and causing fear or alarm through intimidation. He has been placed in custody and handed over to investigators at Phu Phiang Police Station for further legal proceedings.
