Hanoi traffic police fined 204 motorbike drivers from Nov. 13–15 for covering or altering their license plates to evade AI-powered traffic cameras. The violation aims to deceive the city’s expanding digital surveillance and carries severe penalties under Decree 168. Motorcyclists risk fines between VND4-6 million (US$157–236) and a six-point license penalty, while car owners face even steeper fines of VND20–26 million.

The crackdown is a response to increasing attempts by drivers, particularly ride-hailing operators, to avoid detection by obscuring their license plates. Common tactics include using black tape, face masks, or strategically placed stickers or goods to hide or alter the plate numbers. These deliberate actions undermine public safety and order, according to Hanoi’s Traffic Police Department.

When stopped, drivers have provided various excuses, such as unknowingly having covered plates or blaming children for stickers. However, authorities assert that these acts are intentional, with some even using them to commit crimes unnoticed. The city plans to explore tougher penalties to deter future violations.

Hanoi recently enhanced its enforcement with a network of 1,873 AI cameras placed at intersections. These cameras, capable of 360-degree scanning and detecting objects from 500–700 meters, operate under all weather conditions, making them a robust tool in traffic management. As the city continues to adapt to digital monitoring, authorities anticipate decreasing violations through increased vigilance and stricter regulations, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Hanoi fined 204 motorcyclists for altering plates to evade cameras.
  • Violations carry fines and license point deductions under Decree 168.
  • More stringent penalties are being considered to prevent future offenses.
