Vietnam's central and Central Highlands provinces are experiencing one of their worst disasters in years as relentless floods have caused devastating losses. The floods have left 102 people dead or missing, as indicated by the latest reports from disaster authorities, marking an increase of 34 casualties from the previous day. Thousands of homes have been inundated or destroyed, while crops, livestock, and entire communities suffer extensive damage.

The disaster's impact is most severe in Dak Lak Province with 63 deaths and eight missing, followed by Khanh Hoa with 14 deaths and two unaccounted for, and Lam Dong reporting five fatalities. Other affected areas include Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, and Gia Lai. Economic losses are estimated at nearly US$343 million, with expectations for the figure to rise as evaluations continue.

Heavily affected regions are bracing for more rain, with forecasts predicting substantial rainfall in Hue, Da Nang, and eastern Quang Ngai Province from November 23 to 25. The Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention has reported massive damage to agriculture, housing, and infrastructure, with over 80,000 hectares of crops ruined and millions of livestock lost.

Transportation remains disrupted as some highways and railway sections are still blocked, and large-scale power outages continue to affect the region. Relief efforts are underway, with provinces urgently requesting supplies, including food, water-treatment chemicals, medical kits, and aid to restore agricultural activities.

Gia Lai has requested 2,000 tonnes of rice, while Dak Lak is seeking food, social assistance packages, and support for agricultural recovery. Repairing infrastructure and restoring basic services are priorities as authorities and humanitarian agencies respond to the widespread devastation, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • The floods have resulted in significant human and economic losses, with increasing casualties and damages.
  • Urgent relief is being sought to aid affected communities and restore essential services.
  • Heavy rains are expected to continue, posing further challenges for recovery efforts.
