A recent study by UNICEF Philippines and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) revealed that nearly all Filipino children will encounter around five annual heatwaves by 2050. This surge in heatwaves raises concerns over increased risks of heatstroke, dehydration, and preterm births. The Climate Landscape Analysis for Children (CLAC) study, launched on Nov. 25 in Quezon City, highlights the intensifying climate challenges facing the Philippines.

The research also warns that 80 percent of the country's water supply might be at risk by 2040, exacerbating the threat of disease outbreaks due to damage to water infrastructure from typhoons and other disasters. Over the 2023 to 2024 school year, climatic hazards led to a loss of 32 school days, constituting 18 percent of the academic year. Vulnerable areas include Palawan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and several regions in Muslim Mindanao, which experience frequent climate hazards and have weak infrastructure.

UNICEF Philippines Representative Kyungsun Kim emphasized the urgent need for enhanced investments in adaptation and responses to climate-induced loss and damage. She noted that national plans prioritize social services for children but pointed out the gap in the allocation and implementation of overseas development assistance and national budgets for adaptive measures.

Climate Change Commission Vice Chairperson Robert E.A. Borje highlighted the scale of displacement challenges, with an estimated 9.7 million child displacements driven by storms, of which 85 percent were due to typhoons. Projections indicate that 2.5 million children will remain at risk of displacement from storm surges in the next three decades, reported Manila Bulletin.

Key Takeaways

  • By 2050, nearly all children in the Philippines will face five annual heatwaves.
  • 80 percent of the water supply could be at risk by 2040.
  • Investments in adaptation and child protection are urgently needed.
