Vice President Sara Duterte and Davao del Sur Gov. Yvonne Cagas announced a P2 million total reward for the arrest of those responsible for Barangay Captain Oscar Bucol's death. Bucol, a PDP-Laban member and Duterte supporter, was killed in his Digos City home on Tuesday evening, during a Facebook live stream. Duterte authorized attorney Israelito Torreon to announce her P1 million reward for the mastermind's capture, while Cagas offered P500,000 each for the gunman and mastermind.

Bucol was killed while live streaming, talking to an elderly man who returned a wallet when shots were fired. The video showed Bucol running and then slumping to the ground, where he pleaded for help. He later died at the hospital from a bullet wound in his chest. Police Col. Leo Ajero stated potential motives are being investigated, with Bucol's critical social media posts under review as possible evidence.

Bucol's outspoken defense of the underprivileged may have led to his murder, according to Torreon. Despite receiving prior death threats, Bucol continued his advocacy. The family has requested NBI involvement for a comprehensive investigation, expressing a need for an independent review alongside the local police efforts. A Special Investigation Task Group has been formed to focus on the case.

Authorities are assessing several persons of interest mentioned in Bucol's social media, seeking broader insights into the motive. This response aims to prevent further incidents and maintain peace in Davao del Sur, as emphasized by Gov. Cagas, who stated the necessity to avoid an atmosphere of fear, reported Manila Bulletin.

Key Takeaways

  • A P2 million reward is offered for leads in the murder of Barangay Captain Bucol.
  • Bucol's critical social media posts may have influenced the motives for his killing.
  • Investigations involve both the local police and potentially the NBI for thoroughness.
