Her Majesty Queen Suthida presided over the start of the 21.1-kilometre half marathon at the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2025 at Sanam Luang on November 30, marking a high-profile opening to one of the country’s major running events. She was joined by Kenyan Olympic gold medallist Eliud Kipchoge, with whom she completed the half marathon in 2 hours and 13 minutes. The event drew significant attention as thousands of runners began the race under Her Majesty’s patronage.

This year’s marathon formed part of the eighth edition of the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok Presented by Toyota, attracting elite competitors from Kenya, Ethiopia, Poland and Thailand. Following the half marathon, Her Majesty later sounded the air horn to launch the 10-kilometre race in front of the statue of Phra Mae Thorani. She remained at the venue to observe marathon runners crossing the finish line, underscoring the ceremonial significance of the event.

The men’s overall full marathon, 42.2km, title went to Bekele Shiferaw Agunafr of Ethiopia with a winning time of 2.14.27 hours, ahead of compatriot Tariku Abdi at 2.19.15 hours and Poland’s Krzysztof Hadas at 2.19.24 hours.

In the women’s overall marathon category, Eunice Nyawira Muchiri of Kenya secured first place with a time of 2.39.27 hours. She was followed by Ethiopia’s Hajer Kahsay Berhe at 2.43.49 hours and Meseret Yedaw, also from Ethiopia, who finished in 2.47.55 hours.

Thai athletes also delivered notable performances, with Natthawat Innun claiming the best Thai result in the men’s marathon at 2.30.55 hours. In the women’s division, Dr Charinya Kanchanasevi finished as the top Thai competitor with a time of 3.00.26 hours. The results highlighted the strong international and domestic presence at the event, reinforcing the marathon’s growing stature.

Organisers emphasised the significance of the race in promoting sports tourism and enhancing Bangkok’s profile as a host city for major international sporting events. The involvement of Her Majesty and Eliud Kipchoge contributed to heightened visibility and public engagement. Authorities anticipate that the success of this year’s marathon will support future participation levels and strengthen Thailand’s long-term position in regional athletics.

Khoasod reported that with the 2025 edition completed, preparations for next year’s race are expected to begin shortly. Officials will review logistics, participation data, and feedback from athletes to guide improvements. The event is set to continue its role as a key fixture in Thailand’s annual sporting calendar.

OK, for him, running a half marathon in 2 hours 13 minutes is pretty <deleted>ty, since he can run a full marathon in under 2 hours. 🫣 But for her, it’s actually impressive to complete a half marathon in that time. That’s not just some politician strolling into an event - it's a solid performance from her. 👍👍

Did any of the competitors get hit by a motorbike on a crossing or fall down a sinkhole?

? Don't understand those times...over two hours for a half marathon???

How fast could you run one?

It is a bit confusing as there was a marathon, a half marathon, and a 10k on the same day.

Some of those reported times are for the full marathon, but HM Suthida ran a half marathon in 2:13, which isn't bad for a beginner IMO.
