A Vietnamese scholar, Tran Thanh Nhan Duc, has won a prestigious $93,000-a-year fellowship with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS). The 29-year-old from Binh Dinh Province is completing his doctorate in civil engineering at the University of Virginia. His research will focus on modeling agricultural ecosystems to address water-resource and food-production challenges in the western U.S.

In 2014, Duc faced a significant setback when he failed his university entrance exam for the University of Economics in Danang. Driven to overcome this failure, he persevered and pursued a degree in hydraulic engineering at the University of Science and Technology – University of Danang. Determined to prove himself, Duc vowed to study abroad and obtain a doctorate within 10 years.

In 2020, Duc was awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship for a master's program in Hydroinformatics and Water Management, which included studies across multiple European countries. His academic achievements led to several PhD offers from U.S. universities, and he chose the University of Virginia for its robust support. During his PhD, Duc focused on building a portfolio to stand out in federal recruitment, earning numerous scholarships and awards while publishing nearly 30 scientific papers.

Professor Venkataraman Lakshmi described Duc as highly skilled, noting his ability to make complex scientific concepts understandable. Unfortunately, while applying for the USDA fellowship, Duc's father passed away. Despite this personal tragedy, he successfully completed an interview with representatives from USDA-ARS, securing the fellowship shortly thereafter.

Duc plans to use the USDA position to support his family and hopes to expand his professional network, aiming for U.S.-Vietnam collaboration in water and climate research. His long-term goal is to return to Vietnam to be closer to his family, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Duc overcame an early academic failure to secure a prestigious USDA fellowship.
  • He published nearly 30 scientific papers during his PhD, showcasing substantial research.
  • Duc aims to use his position to support his family and foster international collaboration.
