A severed undersea cable has caused extensive power outages on Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, disrupting normal life and affecting thousands. A contractor inadvertently damaged the 110 kV Ha Tien – Phu Quoc submarine cable on November 29, creating widespread issues for homes and businesses. The island's hotels have resorted to using generators continuously, significantly increasing operational expenses.

Prior to this incident, the cable provided a stable power source, essential for both residents and the thriving tourism sector. The outages have resulted in rolling blackouts to manage the limited electricity supply. Some areas experienced up to 40 hours without electricity, impacting daily routines and business operations.

Residents like Thach Nhu have faced significant challenges, traveling long distances for basic necessities like water. Hotel manager Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang described the outages as torturous, with inflated costs due to generator use. These temporary solutions have not only strained financial resources but also disturbed peace and comfort.

Responses from the tourism sector highlight concerns over long-term effects on visitor perceptions, as the island is in peak season attracting numerous international tourists. With hotel occupancy rates high, the outages pose a risk to the island's reputation. The Southern Power Corporation announced that repairs might take a month if weather conditions are conducive.

Authorities are deploying 12 additional generators to alleviate the situation, but rotating outages continue to affect approximately 30,000 customers. Most households have power restored, but many businesses rely on temporary, insufficient solutions. Legal repercussions are anticipated for the contractor, as the damage violated existing safety regulations.

The local government is conducting an investigation to determine accountability and devise solutions to ensure power stability. Until repairs are completed, residents and businesses remain on edge, adapting to the unreliable supply with caution and contingency planning, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • A damaged undersea cable caused massive outages on Phu Quoc Island.
  • Hotels and businesses face increased costs due to reliance on generators.
