Northern Vietnam is preparing for a significant temperature drop as a cold front moves south, starting Wednesday. The temperature in mountainous regions could fall to 13–15°C, with high-altitude areas going below 11°C. In lowland areas, temperatures are expected to range between 15–18°C, affecting Hanoi slightly later with a gradual decrease expected towards the weekend.

Forecasters indicate that Hanoi's daytime highs will reach 24–25°C over the next two days, with nighttime temperatures dropping from 20°C to around 16°C. By the weekend, temperatures may further drop, with daytime highs between 18–22°C. Mountain areas like Sa Pa could experience lower temperatures of 9–13°C by Friday morning.

In Central Vietnam, the cold air will interact with remnants of former Storm Koto, leading to heavy rain. From Tuesday night through Thursday, areas like Hue, Da Nang, and eastern Quang Ngai could receive 100–200 mm of rain, some exceeding 300 mm. Other areas such as Quang Tri and Khanh Hoa are expected to see 40–100 mm, with potential for heavier downpours.

Northeasterly winds will intensify along the coast and offshore, causing wave heights of 2–4 meters in the Gulf of Tonkin, and 3–5 meters in the northern East Sea. This combination of cold air and heavy rain poses risks to agriculture, increasing the likelihood of landslides and flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

November experienced three significant cold spells, with one causing temperatures to dip below 2°C in Dong Van. Experts predict an increase in both the occurrence and severity of these cold spells in December, especially in the northern mountainous regions, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Northern Vietnam braces for a cold spell causing sharp temperature drops.
  • Central Vietnam faces heavy rain due to the cold front and remnants of Storm Koto.
  • Increased risks of flooding, landslides, and crop threats are anticipated.
