The South Korean Supreme Court has upheld the sentences for three men convicted of murdering a fellow South Korean tourist and disposing of his body in a reservoir near Pattaya, Thailand. A 28-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment, while a 40-year-old and a 27-year-old received 30 and 25 years respectively. The decision confirms earlier judgments by the Court of Appeals and Changwon District Court.

The victim, 34-year-old Roh Eui Jong, was killed in May of the previous year. The perpetrators robbed and murdered him, placing his body in a plastic barrel before abandoning it in the Map Prachan reservoir in Bang Lamung district. Authorities captured the suspects in different locations: Phnom Penh, Vietnam, and Jeongeup city, South Korea.

The convicted men, identified by Thai police as Lee Yong Jin, Lee Roun, and Kim Haeonne Won, were also found to be involved in financial scams. They were reportedly living off funds obtained through voice scams and demanded money from the victim’s family following his death. Other South Korean tourists were also targeted and robbed by these individuals.

Looking forward, these rulings serve as a warning to other criminals, emphasizing the severe penalties for such crimes. The case highlights ongoing cooperation between Thai and South Korean authorities in handling transnational crime. The South Korean police continue to work closely with their Thai counterparts to ensure justice and safety for citizens abroad, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • South Korean Court upholds murder convictions tied to a 2022 case.
  • Crimes included robbery and killing of a tourist in Thailand.
  • Convicted individuals also involved in scams targeting Korean nationals.

South Korea isn't messing around. Nice to see a country give out proper punishments for heinous crimes instead of coddling criminals.

I am confused? "The South Korean Supreme Court has upheld the sentences for three men convicted of murdering a fellow South Korean tourist and disposing of his body in a reservoir near Pattaya,"

The murder took place in South Korea and for some reason the body was taken to Thailand. Or as I suspect the murder tool place in Thailand so why isn't Thailand prosecuting the culprits?

When you have a transnational crime like this one, where multiple countries might have jurisdiction, there's usually a process of negotiation to decide who prosecutes, with either the state holding the suspect(s) or having the strongest link to the case, being the one that brings the suspects to trial.

Here, the suspects and the victim were South Korean and all of the accused were either arrested in, or extradited to South Korea so (presumably with the Thai authorities' concurrence and cooperation) South Korea took the lead in the prosecution.

Never heard of that before. With the exception of some sort or cyber crime committed in one country against another I always thought a crime court case was held where the crime was committed. That is a bummer if you murder somebody Thailand then bribed the Thai prosecutor but then get prosecuted in your home country.
