Train services on Bangkok’s Red Line were suspended Friday morning after theft of electricity wires at Rangsit Station disrupted power supply. Sutep Punthupeng, CEO of SRT Electrified Train Co., stated that a short-circuit was detected at 4am. The ground wires at electricity transformers were found to be cut and stolen, impacting operations.

Officials shut down the power supply at Rangsit Station for immediate repairs and expanded checks across the line for safety. This led to a suspension of travel on the Rangsit-Lak Hok section from 5-7am, with the entire route halted until 8:50am. Only the Red Line was affected, while the Light Red Line to Taling Chan remained operational.

The State Railway of Thailand subsidiary plans to accelerate projects next month to erect more fencing along the entire route. Additionally, there are plans to relocate power lines underground to prevent future thefts.

SRT’s prompt response underscores the importance of transport safety and minimizing disruption. However, such incidents highlight vulnerabilities in infrastructure security. Experts suggest increased security measures could deter future disruptions.

Looking forward, improving infrastructure security remains a priority to ensure reliable train services. The planned upgrades may mitigate theft risks and improve overall service efficiency, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Theft of wires led to temporary suspension of Red Line services.
  • The Light Red Line to Taling Chan was unaffected by the disruptions.
  • SRT plans infrastructure upgrades to prevent future incidents.
