A devastating fire at Goa's popular Birch nightclub has claimed 25 lives, including staff and tourists. Initially, local officials suspected a gas cylinder explosion, but now they believe indoor fireworks ignited the blaze. When tragedy struck, the club was teeming with revellers enjoying a Bollywood DJ.

The incident unfolded in North Goa, a tourist hotspot known for its vibrant nightlife and sandy beaches. Four immediate arrests were made, including the nightclub's manager, and an arrest warrant has been issued for the owner. Goa’s chief minister, Pramod Sawant, described the scenario as chaos, with most victims succumbing to suffocation.

Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic amidst a typical Saturday night. The fire department faced challenges due to the narrow access path to the club. Inside, melted remains of furniture were visible among the charred debris. Six survivors remain hospitalised in stable conditions.

Local workers formed a significant portion of the victims, with many hailing from different Indian states and one from Nepal. Anxious loved ones struggle to make contact with those who were present. Emergency teams continue to sift through the site, with a full report on the fire’s cause expected within a week.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, labelling the event as "deeply saddening." The tragedy casts a shadow over Goa’s tourism sector, which sees millions every year, including 270,000 foreign visitors in the first half of this year alone. Opposition parties demand stringent safety regulations, pointing to a rise in entertainment venue fires across India.

Recent catastrophic fires include a Hyderabad building blaze that killed 17 and a Kolkata hotel fire claiming 15 lives, further highlighting infrastructure safety concerns. Authorities stress the necessity for stringent measures to prevent such recurring disasters, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

A fire at Birch nightclub in Goa resulted in 25 fatalities.
Indoor fireworks are suspected as the fire’s cause.

Investigators believe the fierce blaze was triggered by fireworks being set off inside the venue, Birch By Romeo Lane, which is located in a busy nightlife area of Goa, a coastal state popular with domestic and international tourists.

A tragic fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa, India, resulted in 25 fatalities, prompting the club’s owners, Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, to flee to Phuket. The brothers left on IndiGo flight 6E1073 shortly after the incident on Sunday, escaping before police could apprehend them. Indian authorities are now seeking Interpol's assistance to locate and arrest the duo.

The fire broke out at 12:04 am local time on Sunday, with firefighters working through the night to control the blaze. An investigation revealed that "electrical firecrackers" likely triggered the fire, causing suffocation deaths in the club’s basement and kitchen. Sadly, at least 14 of the victims were club employees.

Saurabh Luthra expressed his sorrow on social media, stating the management was "deeply shaken by the tragic loss of lives," though he did not disclose his whereabouts. Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered a magisterial inquiry and checks on other nightclubs, ensuring safety and responsibility for the incident. Four arrests have been made.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged compensation for victims' families, offering 200,000 rupees to each of the deceased’s families and 50,000 rupees to the injured. Goa, known for its tourist appeal with its beaches and landscapes, is a significant destination, drawing millions of visitors each year.

Looking ahead, authorities are intensifying efforts to enhance safety at entertainment venues. With the ongoing investigation and international search for the Luthra brothers, the situation remains fluid. Future measures will likely focus on preventing such tragedies and ensuring accountability within the nightlife industry, reported Bangkok Post.

Find them quickly, arrest them, extradite them to India, and tack on an extra 10 years to their prison sentence for cowardly behavior, fleeing the scene of a crime, and extreme moral bankruptcy.

I had the pleasure of spending some time in Goa 35 years ago and it was amazing back then, the parties were fantastic.

I would imagine it's not the same at all these days, very similar to how Bali has gone completely downhill, and neither place is somewhere I would want to return to. I also have the great pleasure of visiting Bali 40 years ago and it was fantastic, 10 years ago it was horrendous.

Having said that I'd love to go back to India and explore it some more, it's a fascinating country, and I'd love to go back to Indonesia and explore it some more. Amazing place, and amazing people, it's just Bali that sucks these days.

Of course to Thailand because they welcome any kind of sh... people.

Two Indian brothers, Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, were apprehended in Thailand following their escape from India. They fled after a fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa on December 6, which killed 25 people. Thai authorities confirmed their arrest in Phuket today, December 11, via the Indian Ambassador to Thailand, Nagesh Singh.

The fire initially thought to be caused by a gas explosion, was later attributed to fireworks ignited inside the venue. In response, local authorities detained six people involved in the club's operations, including its manager, and launched a manhunt for the Luthra brothers. Finding their Delhi home empty, Indian police coordinated with Interpol to track the brothers to Thailand.

Before departing India, Saurabh Luthra expressed condolences on social media and pledged aid to victims' families. Despite this, they quickly left the country for Phuket. Their lawyer declared the brothers victims of a "witch hunt," attributing the fire to a tragic accident rather than deliberate wrongdoing.

Following their arrest, the brothers made no statements to the press. The Goa state government is taking steps to revoke their passports, and they will be extradited to India for legal proceedings. The incident has drawn attention to safety protocols in entertainment venues.

Looking forward, the brothers’ extradition will likely unfold soon, impacting their legal battle. Authorities in Goa are expected to review safety measures at similar venues to prevent future tragedies. The nightclub tragedy underscores the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations amid ongoing investigations, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Two brothers arrested in Thailand following a fatal Goa nightclub fire.
