Cool Breeze Set to Sweep Across Northern Thailand

Thailand is bracing for a chilly spell, with the Meteorological Department forecasting a temperature drop in northern and northeastern regions by 2–4°C during December 8–10. Meanwhile, central and eastern parts will see a decrease of 1–3°C. The drop in temperature is due to a surge of cold air from China, bringing crisp mornings and chilly winds to many northern areas.

This week, residents can enjoy a brisk start to their days with temperatures on high mountain peaks potentially plummeting to a cool 4–10°C. In Bangkok and neighbouring provinces, temperatures will modestly decline by 1–2°C, creating pleasantly cool mornings. Expectations are set for a brief period of relief from the usual warmth, with a touch of brisk winds accompanying the cooler days.

From December 11–13, preparations should be made for a return to warmer conditions as the cold front weakens. Easterly winds will return, impacting the Central and Eastern regions. On December 12–13, the North and upper Northeast may experience westerly trough influences, bringing scattered thunderstorms, isolated heavy rainfall, and gusty winds.

In the South, from December 7–10, scattered thunderstorms will occur as the northeast monsoon continues. The Gulf of Thailand could see waves reaching up to 2 metres, increasing in stormy conditions. The period from December 11–13 will bring more rain in the upper South, with waves ranging from 1–2 metres, higher during thunderstorms, reported the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways:

  • Northern Thailand will cool by 2–4°C from December 8–10.
  • Bangkok will experience slightly cooler mornings with light winds.
  • Warmer temperatures and storms will return from December 11–13.
