Thailand Vows Military Action Until Sovereignty Secured

Thailand will persist with military action against Cambodia until its sovereignty is fully secured, as stated by Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow to the foreign diplomatic corps today. The announcement was made during a briefing attended by 73 representatives from numerous countries and international organisations to discuss escalating tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border.

Tensions have risen due to repeated claims of violations by Cambodia, including breaches of a ceasefire and aggressive actions such as alleged landmine planting. Despite Cambodia's public call for peace, Sihasak claims its actions tell a different story, citing Cambodian gunfire into Thai territory and the use of long-range weaponry near the border. Recent clashes have resulted in one Thai soldier's death and eight others injured.

The situation has become critical, with reports of Cambodian rocket launcher attacks on Thai civilian areas. To defend itself, Thailand conducted airstrikes on heavily mined territories, adhering to international law and the UN Charter's principles. Additionally, Thailand has raised issues at international forums highlighting landmine incidents as evidence of Cambodian breaches.

Humanitarian concerns are mounting, with nearly 400,000 residents evacuated from affected provinces and hundreds of schools and hospitals suspending operations. Thailand accuses Cambodia of spreading misinformation to blame Thailand for the hostilities, using misleading footage and reports.

Diplomatic notes have been sent to ASEAN, the UN, and key international players, documenting Thailand's perspective. The government seeks unity in defending its territory while urging the public to rely on official channels for accurate updates, reported Thai PBS World.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand committed to military action until sovereignty is assured.
  • Clashes with Cambodia have caused significant humanitarian disruption.
  • Thailand accuses Cambodia of misinformation and breach of agreements.

This kind of news will surely have an impact on tourism.. Who want to go to a country that is on the edge of a war. Do the army and Government really think that tourists come here to pay for military support in a war??

Thais love money, but nationalism in Thailand beats even greed... 😆

And closing down schools and hospitals? Jeopardising the kids' education and future, not to mention public health, just to solve a minor border dispute with military force? Well done, Thailand! 😱

I & my partner are in BKK currently. Hoping that our home in Prasat Surin will still be standing when we return at the end of this week. Currently Cambodian artillery & rockets are raining down in that area and in our home village in Phanom Dong Rak.

Hoping the Thai army & air force will finish the job properly this time.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Unless i was someone with interests at the border with Cambodia then I think it just spices it up a bit in general.

The video is fake. They've tried to blur the watermark from Sora (AI service that generates videos), but it's there.

Looks real to me.

But it's very likely not.

It's awful if you live in affected regions close to Cambodia.

But wild rumours/concerns abound . . .

A Falang Friend told me this morning that Thailand has invaded Cambodia, then I hear that Cambodia have rockets that will reach Rayong. I don't think so.

Thailand has far superior and varied firepower. Cambodia will get seriously bloodied if they persist. If the USA can calm both sides that'll help.

The disruption to Civilians in these quite poor areas and for the casualties, it's a nightmare.

Take care all and keep cool.

Minor boarder issue??  this isn't full scale war, but it's not a minor issue.  People have been killed and people have had to be evacuated.

Last time this happened I believe is was around 2007 or 2008 we  had some intense bombing for a few days but then it eased.

We didn't have to evacuate at that time but it was advisable. However, it dragged out for a few years until 2011 with each side tossing bombs at each other.

I would say last time this happened it was minor, this time is much more intense.

My wife's cousins lives in Sisaket (Puu Sing) and they all had to evacuate.

This not like it was in past!

With 'minor border issue', I meant the few disputed square miles, a temple entrance dispute, and landmine accusations. Things like these are usually solved in bilateral talks and agreements, not decade-long war-like actions, which you described...
