Sam Rainsy Calls for Uprising Against Hun Family Rule

Exiled Cambodian opposition figure Sam Rainsy has issued one of his strongest appeals in years, urging the country’s military and citizens to rise up against what he calls the “Hun Sen–Hun Manet regime”. His statement comes amid heightened tensions along the Thai‑Cambodian border and renewed scrutiny of Cambodia’s political leadership.

Speaking on behalf of a group he refers to as the “Independent Cambodian Government of October 23rd”, Rainsy argued that there are “two undeniable reasons” why the Hun family should be removed from power. His comments, released on Monday, sharply escalate his long‑running campaign against Cambodia’s ruling dynasty.

Rainsy’s first accusation centres on recent clashes along the Thai border. He alleges that Cambodian soldiers and civilians were effectively used as “human shields”, claiming that Hun Sen and his son, Prime Minister Hun Manet, ordered troops not to defend themselves during Thai military operations. He argues that such restraint left frontline forces exposed and cost lives unnecessarily.

In his statement, Rainsy asked: “Is there any leader or commander who restricts soldiers from defending themselves against foreign aggression?” He insisted that this pattern had occurred “many times”, accusing the government of sacrificing Khmer soldiers and civilians.

His second allegation targets the government’s handling of transnational scam networks, which have drawn international criticism in recent years. Rainsy claims the Hun family has “actively protected” criminal groups operating inside Cambodia, contributing to economic hardship, rising debt, job losses and widespread insecurity.

“When the leaders of the Hun family protect criminals, it is clear that they have made the Cambodian people their enemy,” he said.

The Cambodian government has repeatedly dismissed Rainsy’s accusations in the past, describing them as politically motivated. Phnom Penh has also rejected claims that it shields scam syndicates, insisting it has cooperated with regional crackdowns.

Rainsy, who has lived in exile for nearly a decade to avoid prison sentences he says are politically driven, continues to command a significant following among segments of the Cambodian diaspora. His latest call for an uprising is likely to further strain relations between the government and opposition groups abroad, as well as add pressure to an already tense border situation with Thailand.

The Hun family remains firmly in control of Cambodia’s political system, and there is no indication that Rainsy’s appeal will shift the balance of power. But his intervention underscores the deep political fractures that continue to shape Cambodian politics.

Rainsy is a hero for the Cambodian people, and has fought against corruption, nepotism, and the leading crime family in Cambodia for decades now. That man deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, for his crusade against the Hun Sen mafia, and his toxic family.

The muppet would have a lot more credibility if he had the balls to lead the uprising he's calling for in person, from within Cambodia.

Telling his fellow Khmers to do so from afar, while sipping champagne in Paris, is just plain ridiculous.

Then there's his longstanding, irrational hatred of the Vietnamese on top of that. I'd say being in trouble with ONE neighboring country is more than enough!
