A group of Chinese nationals set fire to an online scam syndicate office in Min La Pan, Myawaddy Township, Karen State, on the evening of 8 December, causing large plumes of smoke visible from the Thai side of the border. The incident occurred in an area already affected by fighting between Myanmar military forces and the Karen National Union (KNU). Residents and officials reported heightened tension as the blaze unfolded near Huai Mahawang and Mae Kon Ken in Mae Sot District, Tak Province.

The attack was confirmed by KNU military personnel, who stated that the Chinese group burned down the building where they had been working. According to the KNU, the individuals acted out of severe stress and pressure as they were unable to leave the conflict-affected zone or cross into Thailand. The location is close to the Moei River, but there was no available water supply to extinguish the fire.

The KNU and local villagers could not intervene because the area remains a high-risk combat zone. Although gunfire had recently subsided, Myanmar forces have still not regained control of the area, making access unsafe. Observers on the Thai side reported seeing thick black smoke rising from the burning structure, which sits among other buildings in Min La Pan.

Matichon reported that the ongoing clashes between Myanmar troops and the KNU have continued to displace civilians. Many Myanmar residents and foreign nationals have fled to the riverbank, where they have set up makeshift shelters on the sandy banks of the Moei River and looking to possibly enter Thailand illegally. The situation remains tense, with uncertainty surrounding both the conflict and the fate of those trapped in the area.
