Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced three conditions for a ceasefire along the Thai-Cambodian border, with Cambodia required to declare a ceasefire first. The ministry dismissed a Wall Street Journal report suggesting the US is considering imposing tariffs on Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand's stance highlights concerns over Cambodia's previous actions that contradicted its statements, notably on December 14, when Cambodia intensified military action despite signalling a desire for peace.

Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, outlined the conditions: Cambodia must declare and sustain a ceasefire, and work sincerely on landmine clearance. Thailand criticised Cambodia’s recent military activities, including rocket fire that led to civilian casualties and intensified border tensions. The ministry has reached out to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to address alleged violations and assert that Cambodia initiated the attacks, resulting in the closure of over 600 schools and medical facilities for safety reasons.

Thailand also responded to accusations that its military operations have damaged archaeological sites, presenting evidence that Cambodian forces have used these areas as military bases. The suspension of land-border crossings in Cambodia has raised concerns, as it may potentially breach international law by affecting civilians. Thailand stands ready to assist its nationals in Cambodia through its embassy and consulate for identification and repatriation purposes.

Addressing the Wall Street Journal report about potential US tariffs, Nikorndej denied receiving further confirmation beyond a recent phone call between US and Thai leaders, during which they agreed to resume trade talks.

Meanwhile, Thailand expressed a preference for an in-person ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting to clearly communicate border developments, although it was postponed to December 22 due to scheduling conflicts, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand sets three ceasefire conditions, demanding Cambodia act first.
  • Allegations of Cambodian military aggression prompt Thai UN appeal.
  • ASEAN meeting postponed; US tariff concerns were addressed without confirmation.

Maintain the status quo.

So the three ceasefire conditions are:

1 Cambodia must declare and sustain a ceasefire

2  Work sincerely on landmine clearance.

3  Extradite the entire Taksin clan

Cambodia has stepped up its diplomatic offensive over its long-standing dispute and border clashes with Thailand, as its UN representative earlier this week denounced what it described as Thai aggression, at a Security Council debate on peace.

Probably claim victory, build a new Victory Monument at the border.
